St George's Clock Tower, Canterbury
St George's Clock Tower, Canterbury
This tower is all that remains of St George's church which was otherwise destroyed on 1 June 1942 in an air raid. Canterbury, in common with a number of other historic cities, was attacked by the Luftwaffe in the notorious Baedeker Raids - the targets apparently selected from the Baedeker tourist guides - as retaliation for allied bombing of Lubeck's old town district. The ruins were levelled in 1952 but the clock was restored in 1955.
