Frank Whittle statue and Whittle Arch, Millennium Place, Coventry
Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, peers at the sky through the pair of winglike arches that span Millennium Place. The statue was erected in 2007, the centenary of Whittle's birth in Earlsdon, Coventry. Link It was sculpted by Faith Winter.
Educated in Leamington, and later with the RAF and at Cambridge University, Whittle patented an engine in 1930 and worked on it in Rugby, where the first engine test run took place in 1937, and later at Lutterworth, across the county boundary in Leicestershire. The building that this mosaic SP3379 : Mosaic detail in Cov Centre. decorates was originally the Locarno ballroom, hence the jolly design. The artist was Fred Millet.
