The Category B Listed gates LinkExternal link are located at the South Street roundabout entrance to the cemetery. They were built in 1847 to a design by the renowned architect Charles Wilson. The iron foundry work was undertaken by McCulloch and Co of Glasgow.

The large stone gate piers are in Greek Revival style, with carved Greek detailing and flat square caps. The tall double sided ornate cast iron gates and railings feature wreaths surmounted by a St Andrews cross motif, which can also be seen in the gate pier design.

By 2016 it was brought to the attention of Inverclyde Council that the gates and walls were in poor condition and in need of major renovation. The renovation works included jet-washing and shot-blasting to remove old paint and repainting of the gates, fence, gate piers and walls.

The cramped corner location of the site and the very close proximity to the busy A78 Inverkip Road presented challenges to the contractors who had to maintain access to the cemetery and crematorium for the duration of the works.
