Pontefract Castle
The first motte-and-bailey castle was built c1070 by Ilbert de Lacy and it remained with the Lacy family until 1311 when it passed to the house of Lancaster. John of Gaunt made the castle his residence and largely rebuilt the fortifications and buildings. It remained a Royal castle until 1644 when it surrendered to besieging Parliamentarian forces and was slighted in 1649. Link
