A Train enters Tring Railway Cutting at Tring Station
Tring is at the summit of the railway where it crosses the Chiltern Hills, and immediately North of the station it runs through a long and quite deep cutting.
This view is taken looking under the footbridge and road bridge along the direction of the line.
The train disappearing into the distance has just left platform 3 going North, but if it was terminating at Tring it would stop about where it is, the points would be reset, and it would come back into the station - but to platform 4.
Trains coming from the North that don't stop come straight through, but stopping trains can take the other points to come into platform 5, leaving the line past platform 4 free for non-stopping traffic.
The bridge in the distance is SP9412 : A Disused Bridge over the London to Birmingham main line
Tring Railway Station

The London to Birmingham Railway was built by George Stephenson and was the first railway line built out of London. Where it crossed the Chiltern Hills a very significant cutting was excavated at Tring, initially for two lines, but later widened to carry four lines. Tring station opened in 1837 and its rural situation required services to be available and the brother of William Brown the Auctioneer opened the impressive Royal Hotel the following year. which provided food, drink, accommodation and horse transport for arriving passengers. To speed the journey between the town and the station a new road was constructed, Station Road, bypassing Pendley.

In the last 50 years it has seen many changes - including electrification - the goods yard being converted to a car park for the increasing number of commuters. It proved too small - so a multistorey section was added - and the platforms were extended as many commuter trains now terminate here.
