Toton Depot
Locomotives stand outside the depot awaiting their next duty. Classes represented here are, left to right, 45, 44, 47, 08, 56, 20. The class 47 is probably an interloper from Tinsley. The class 44, nearest loco on the left, is 44004 'Great Gable', one of the 10 original 'Peak' class locomotives. The 44's were only employed on passenger duties for a short time - being ousted by the more powerful class 45's and spent the rest of their lives hauling freight at Toton. 44004 was finally withdrawn in October 1980 - one of the last 3 in service. Some of its sisters were already at Derby works awaiting the cutters torch when this photo was taken. Happily, 44004 has been preserved, see some photos at -
