The garden belonged to Akbar and was already a ruin when Shar Jahan planted a grid of plane trees here. It is now the campus of a technical university with avenues of ancient plane trees but no other evidence of having been a Mughal garden to be seen. Naseem Bagh has been designated a Chinar Heritage Park to protect the old specimens of Platanus orientalis. They are a famous autumn spectacle.
Kashmir University has undoubtedly benefited from the trees planted long before it was founded. This is one of the principles of landscape urbanism and is not new to Islamic planning. The most famous example is Isfahan.
