Located west of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is a diverse, STEM-focused institution. In 2022, the university achieved R1 status by Carnegie Classification and is now recognized as having the “highest level of research performance in the nation.” UMBC’s Fall 2022 admissions saw a total of nearly 14,000 enrolled students. The university offers more than 100 majors, minors, and certificate programs across three colleges and three schools. 86% of classes have fewer than 50 students. UMBC encourages students to supplement their academic experience with study abroad, research, and service opportunities, all offered by the university. Students take advantage of UMBC’s proximity to Baltimore City, Washington, D.C., and can take a three-hour drive to NYC. The UMBC retrievers compete in the NCAA-affiliated America East Conference, and in 2018, the men’s basketball team completed one of the most famous upsets in college sports history, becoming the first No. 16 to beat a No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament history. Student traditions range from kicking off homecoming with a bonfire to UMBC’s “Quadmania”- a weekend of live musical performances from a major headliner, an outdoor festival, and more. Notable UMBC alumni include Golden Globe-winning actress Kathleen Turner and celebrity chef Duff Goldman.
