Man Utd owners the Glazers pulled plug on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer summer transfer plans
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was undermined by the Glazers in the transfer window.
Man Utd: Alexis Sanchez arrives in Milan
The Glazers blocked a move for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo to join Everton on transfer deadline day, according to reports.
Rojo remains unsettled at Old Trafford and was the subject of interest from the Merseyside club late in the window.
And the Evening Standard say a loan move was agreed before owners the Glazers pulled the plug as they were demanding a permanent deal that included a £25million fee.
Solskjaer is now left with a player who earns a reported £120,000 per week and is not wanted at the club.
He is one on a long list of players that are on the fringes of Solskjaer’s squad but still pocketing huge wages.
Alexis Sanchez is the club’s top earner on around £400,000 per week but does not figure in the manager’s first-team plans.
Nemanja Matic, Fred and Matteo Darmian are in similar positions, although departures are expected before transfer windows around Europe close on September 2.
Sanchez is close to joining Inter Milan on loan but United will still have to subsidise a significant portion his wages as anything above £150,000 per week would smash Inter’s structure.
Rojo could also still move but time is running out to agree a deal with Marseille, Monaco and AC Milan all reportedly interested.
None of the clubs are likely to meet United’s valuation, though, and if Solskjaer really wants him gone he might have to convince the Glazers to let him leave on loan.
Darmian is another player attracting interest but reports say United want £12mi for him and that could prove to be a stumbling block once again.
He could have left for nothing this summer but United chose to trigger a 12-month extension of his contract and that could end up costing them £5m in wages.
