Sadiq Khan: Caller grills Mayor of London on crime

LBC caller Nick challenged the Mayor to come clean on giving the full picture that led the Conservative Government in 2010 to make cuts to police officers in the country - something Sadiq Khan claims to be the number one reason behind the rise of crime in the capital and the rest of the UK. And as he pointed out omitting facts constitutes "lying" as much as stating the wrong facts does, Nick urged the Mayor to resign and make space for someone more capable in keeping London safe. He said: “Lies are told not only by things people say but also by extension by things people don’t say.

“I’m sure this is a matter of Government record how much money has been spent over certain years but to quote numbers spent in 2010 without also mentioning that in 2010 the outgoing chief secretary to the treasury left a little note saying ‘we have spent all of the money’ is disingenuous.

“There is no point actually saying they cut money which led to austerity, it’s important also to say why they did so.

“You’re a grown-up, Mr Mayor, you know what your job is, you know what are the resources given to you to carry out that job.

“If you feel you cannot keep Londoners safe because you don’t have the resources to do it, then sir, resign and make way for someone else.

“Why haven’t you offered to resign?”

Nick, LBC caller

Baffled by the confrontation, the London Mayor attempted to justify his resilient position by reminding the caller and other listeners in London they will have the opportunity to oust him in the mayoral elections in May.

He responded: “The short answer to why I’m not resigning is next May, Nick, you’ve got a chance to decide whether I should be forced to resign or to continue my job for another four years.

“It’s called democracy. And by the way, I’m not going to shut down the opportunity to vote next May, even if I have the powers to do so.

“I think it’s important to give you the chance next May.

“And what I say to you, with respect, is I don’t think victims of crime should be suffering the consequences of the global recession in 2008 or the global banking crisis.

“I don’t think victims of crime were responsible for the Lehman brothers or the problems they had in 2009.

“We can have a discussion about whether austerity was right. We can have a discussion about whether the Conservative Government in 2010 made the right decision to make the cuts they did. But it was a political choice they had to do so.

“And my point is very simple: cuts have consequences and we lost a lot of money from central government which has meant fewer police officers.

“You can’t run away from the fact that we have lost lots of money from central government, we have lost many police officers and crime has gone up.

“Around the country, by the way, where I’m not responsible and also before 2016 before I was the mayor.”

It comes after Boris Johnson introduced a raft of measures to stop the wave of violent crime in the UK.

In order to tackle the crime crisis ravaging the country, Mr Johnson announced plans to add 20,000 more police officers to the streets.

Moreover, he also proposed spending an extra £2.5billion fund to create 10,000 new prison spaces.

Upon announcing those measures, Mr Johnson reasoned that the surge of funding was important because the public must “see justice being done, punishment being served and feel protected”.
