THE parents of Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland had two reasons to be proud last weekend – when both their sons performed at Glastonbury.
John and Joy Buckland, from Pantymwyn, watched son Jonny – a guitarist with Coldplay – from the comfort of their living room when he headlined the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night.
And Jonny’s big brother Tim, who taught him to play guitar, also appeared at the famous festival with his band The Domino State, who performed on Friday night.
Former Holywell High School teacher John said the pair had always enjoyed playing music together as children.
“I’m sure this would have been the kind of thing they dreamed about doing when they were younger,” he told the Chronicle.
“We’re really proud of both of them.”
This year was the third time Jonny, 33, and his all-conquering bandmates have headlined Glastonbury.
“It was wonderful to watch,” said John.
“He said he really enjoyed it, although he was less nervous this year after doing it a few times before.”
Guitarist Tim, 38, who works in IT, has also played at Glastonbury before.
John said: “He has been in the band for about three years or so and they have played at Glastonbury a few times, but Tim said this was the biggest crowd they had ever played in front of there.”
Jonny, a former Alun School pupil, is set for a summer of travelling, with performances scheduled in Poland, Belgium, France, Japan and South Africa.
But he is juggling his hectic rock star career with life as a family man.
John said: “Jonny has a two-month-old baby called Jonah, so he is very tired at the moment.
“His three-and-a-half-year-old, Violet, has had chicken pox as well.
“But his wife and the baby did manage to make it to Glastonbury to see him perform and they always try to travel as a family.”
John said he and wife Joy travel to London to see both sons and their grandchildren as often as they can.
And he said Jonny is showing no signs of wanting to retire.
He added: “He definitely won’t be stopping anytime soon.
“In between all the festivals and performances this summer the band will be getting into the studio to record the final few songs for their fifth album.”
