GM Robert Huebner

Robert Huebner is a German grandmaster who was a four-time candidate for the world championship. In 1981, he nearly challenged GM Anatoly Karpov for the title but lost the Candidates final to GM Viktor Korchnoi. Three years later, Huebner was still tied with GM Vasily Smyslov in the quarterfinal of the Candidates after 14 games. Nowadays there would be a rapid tiebreak, but back then the tie was broken, of all places, at a casino. Hubner lost the match on the spin of a roulette wheel.

Huebner's prime came during the Cold War, and he represented West Germany, the BRD (Bundesrepublik Deutschland). In the 1972 Olympiad he won the individual gold medal on board one. Huebner also won the German Chess Championship twice, 32 years apart: West Germany in 1967 and a reunified Germany in 1999.
