Chief Justice Of Supreme Court Receive International Jurists Award

The Honourable Dato Paduka Steven Chong Wan Oon, Chief Justice of Supreme Court has been awarded the prestigious International Jurists Award 2019. The Honourable is the first Bruneian jurist to receive such prestigious award for his life-long unique contribution in the field of administration of justice. The award was presented by International Council of Jurists, an organization comprising of jurists who work towards the promotion of the administration of justice and the vigorous advancement and expansion of the law, expedient to the social and economic needs of the people. The award presentation ceremony took place this afternoon at the Supreme Court in the capital.
Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, the President of the International Council of Jurists in his speech stated that the presentation of the International Jurists Award 2019 to The Honourable Dato Paduka Steven Chong Wan Oon was based on his life-long unique contribution in the field of administration of justice and in recognition of his exemplary and far-reaching contribution to the theory and practice of law for the advancement of justice.
Meanwhile, His Excellency Richard Lindsay, The British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Pesuruhjaya Tinggi British in a speech expressed his appreciation to the International Council of Jurists for their work across the world in the development of justice and equality
The accolade was presented by Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, President of the International Council of Jurists. The Honourable has played a significant role in the efforts to improve the country's justice delivery system to a more strong and independent.
In his speech The Chief Justice of Supreme Court said the Judiciary is committed to upholding the rule of law and improving the quality of the country's justice delivery system and spoke about the initiatives undertaken by the Judiciary to establish an efficient and effective Judical System and enhancing access to Justice.
Among those in attendance were Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Haji Hairol Arni Haji Abdul Majid, the Attorney General and Yang Arif Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Rostaina Pengiran Haji Duraman, Justice of the High Court. Brunei Darussalam upholds its dual legal system based on both Syariah law and Common law in administering justice.
