Working for a sustainable future

The BPI represents the UK’s record companies and labels and champions British music. Through its policy-led work, it fosters an environment in which its members and their artists can thrive.

As a Co-Founder and Supporter of the Music Climate Pact, the BPI is committed to an industry that operates sustainably to reduce its negative environmental impact.

British music across all genres excels at home and around the world. UK record labels enable an ecosystem of creativity and innovation by investing in new music and nurturing diverse talent.

In an increasingly interactive world, shaped by new and intuitive technologies, the UK’s creative and innovative spirit connects fans with artists and one another. This same belief in the power of music also connects them in their growing concerns around the climate crisis and a desire to see a sustainable future, recognising that there can be NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET.

Our membership includes many of the world’s music companies and labels, many of whom are Music Climate Pact Signatories and Supporters themselves and are already showing leadership on this key issue. They also represent artists who feel passionately and who express their concerns through their music, activism, and fundraising. It is essential the music community remains united in its response, made meaningful not just in what it says, but through its collective and collaborative actions. We know that where music leads, others will follow.

The formation of the Music Climate Pact has added to the ecosystem that is driving a green revolution throughout music. The BPI champions these voices and the work of its members, and is also committed to addressing its own environmental impacts.

Our sustainability commitments cover...

Ourselves:

We began our environmental programme focusing on our most material emissions and those that intersect with our members. Our emphasis has been on direct carbon reductions and creating collaborative and impactful action within the industry. This has meant first focusing outside of ourselves on the wider recorded industry and our industry-based events. We will continue to set new work streams, as bandwidth allows, to combat the climate and nature crisis.

Our events:

We are especially focused on where we create the most emissions, The BRIT Awards, and are proud of recent strides to make it more sustainable, though there is much more to do. Our learnings on the BRIT Awards influence team action on the Mercury Prize and other industry events. We disclose BRIT Awards emissions on CDP annually.

Our industry:

• The BPI hosts regular sustainability planning meetings and champions the achievements of its members in amplifying sector knowledge and good practice.

• In response to COP26 and the climate crisis, the BPI and AIM founded the Music Climate Pact, a shared commitment alongside record company signatories and other supporters including Julie’s Bicycle, Music Declares Emergency, and Murmur. Read more about the Music Climate Pact’s commitments here.

• We declared a climate emergency with Music Declares Emergency.
