Siberut Macaque Characteristics

Siberut Macaque

The Siberut macaque[1] (Macaca siberu) is an endangered macaque species native to the island of Siberut in Indonesia.

  • It was previously thought to be conspecific with the Pagai Island macaque (Macaca pagensis), which is paler overall, but this arrangement was polyphyletic.
  • Both were previously considered subspecies of the southern hog macaque (Macaca nemestrina).
  • Siberut macaques and Pagai Island macaques are similar in sexual dimorphism, body lengths, tail lengths, and weights.
  • Siberut macaques’ back is dark brown and faded brown on the neck sides, shoulder front, and underside.
  • Legs are brown, and arms are reddish brown. Siberut macaques’ faces are hairless, and have black skin and brown eyes. They have cheek pouches to carry food while feeding.

What Do Siberut Macaques Eat?

In the wild, the Siberut Macaque feeds on Breadfruit (Artocarpus), Burmese Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis) and Jointfir (Gnetum)[¶].

Siberut Macaque Facts

  • Siberut macaques live above the forest floor in the canopy and forage between 24 and 36 meters. They can roost as high as 45 meters.
  • Groups of Siberut macaques consist of approximately 5 to 25 individuals. A group usually consists of a single male with adult females and their young.
  • The male decides where to go and announces it to the rest of the group with high-pitched, loud calls.
  • Migratory and solitary Siberut macaques may challenge the dominant male for the position, leading to aggressive fights.
  • The species’ natural enemies are the reticulated python and the crested short-toed eagle.
