The Boss Sounds Reggae Festival, the UK’s biggest reggae festival, will take place across Newcastle on 18 and 19 November at the University of Northumbria and World Headquarters, Newcastle. Soul-fuelled ska The festival will bring together many of the greats from reggae's golden age.

Artists appearing include the legendary Jimmy Cliff - one of the most distinctive and versatile voices in reggae, with such memorable hits behind him as "Wonderful World Beautiful People", "Harder They Come", "Many Rivers to Cross" and "You Can Get It If You Really Want". There’s also the very welcome return of Prince Buster, the king of Blue-Beat Ska, "Oh Carolina" and "Whine & Grine". Meanwhile gird your loins for a heavy set with Audio Alchemist Lee "Scratch" Perry, topped off with a bombastic set by the Trojan Sound System. Other guests will include Horace Andy (whose distinctive voice shaped Massive Attack), Dub-bard, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Princess of Lover’s Rock, Janet Kay, Dennis Bovell’s Dub Band and Pama International - a soul-fuelled ska, rocksteady and dub sensation, starring members from The Specials, Madness, Steel Pulse, Galliano + DJ Don Letts. The festival is promoted by Newcastle’s Jumpin’ Hot Club in association with the premier reggae record label, Trojan Records. Trojan are so enamoured by the Boss Sound ethic that they have pre-released an exclusive Trojan Selecta Vol 4 CD, featuring the best of the Newcastle Boss Sounds Festival 2006. Boss Sounds aims to illustrate the history of reggae music by bringing together many of its key exponents. And they have undoubtedly assembled one of the toughest bills ever put together in the UK. The festival highlights the impact reggae has had on the punk and two-tone movements as well as on contemporary dance culture - from the music’s roots of ska, vintage reggae, dub poetry, and dancehall. It’s a journey from Jamaica to England which is making a welcome stop in the region.
