Deal after Newport mosque row with AM Mohammad Asghar
A row over the running of two mosques in Newport which led to a Conservative assembly member being served with an injunction, warning him to stay away from prayers, has been resolved.
It was claimed Mohammad Asghar acted aggressively in opposing plans to hold elections at the mosque. He denies the allegation and said he had the support of his party leader.
At Cardiff Civil Justice Centre, a judge said he had no power to extend the interim injunction against Mr Asghar but invited both parties to seek an agreement.
After hours of negotiations, the interim management of the Jamia Mosque and Al-Noor Mosque in Newport agreed with Mr Asghar that only imams would be allowed to address large gatherings of people.
The interim management of both mosques reiterated their desire for elections to be held in the new year.
Both sides said there were still outstanding issues to resolve.
