The first episode of the Owarimonogatari television anime ended on Sunday with an announcement that the Kizumonogatari anime project will be split into three films. The first film, Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen (Blood and Iron), will open on January 8, and advance tickets will go on sale on October 9 with a bonus clear file folder (pictured below) at participating theaters. The films Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu-hen (Passionate Blood) and Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen (Cold Blood) will then follow.

Kizumonogatari is the third volume in NisiOisin's Monogatari book series and is a prequel to Bakemonogatari. It tells the story of how protagonist Koyomi encounters the female vampire that would turn him and his journey to return to his normal life.

The main cast includes several returning cast members:

Akiyuki Simbo is once again credited as chief director at the anime studio SHAFT, and Tatsuya Oishi is the director. Akio Watanabe and Hideyuki Morioka are designing the characters. Yōta Tsuruoka is directing the sound, and Satoru Kousaki is composing the music.

The official website for the anime project debuted in 2011 with a trailer. At the time the project was slated for 2014. The project was later briefly listed for a fall 2013 release.

The official website for the Kizumonogatari anime film project opened a countdown on Thursday. The countdown ended on Sunday, October 4 at 12:56 a.m. Japan time (Saturday, October 3 at 11:56 a.m. EDT), when the first episode of the Owarimonogatari television anime also ended. The source code on the website contained an image and the line, "That's bad. I'm not showing you anything today."

Vertical announced in February that it has licensed the original light novel.
