Bells of Freedom Mass Market Paperback – August 1, 1995

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

That the British had occupied Boston and closed her harbor meant little to Jed Crane, an English boy sold to a cruel Boston smithy. Jed was just happy that his mean taskmaster had been persuaded to sell him to the amiable printer Mr. Box.

Now Jed would get a chance to learn to read and explore the bustling, restless city. But when his new master's mysterious dealings forced Jed to slip through the British lines, the indentured servant was captured by the rebels and brought face-to-face with American patriots engaged in a life-or-death struggle.

Suddenly freedom was no longer a faraway issue. The meeting with the red-haired firebrand of a major would change Jed's life forever. From the first brave shot at Lexington to the fierce battles of Dorchester Heights and Breed's Hill, Jed fought for some hard answers in his own war between liberty and loyalty. What he found in the glorious spirit of the times was courage.

I READ BELLS OF FREEDOM SOME YEARS AGO AND HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN IT. AT THE TIME I WAS SO IMPRESSED WITH THE STORY THAT I PURCHASED A WHOLE CLASS SET FOR MY SCHOOL SO THAT THE 4TH GRADERS COULD READ IT....IT WAS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO OUR COLLECTION OF AMERICAN REVOLUTION LITERATURE. I, MYSELF, LOVE LEARNING HISTORY THROUGH READING YOUNG ADULT NOVELS. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A SECOND HAND BOOK TO SEND TO A YOUNG 4TH GRADE FRIEND, CONOR, WHO LOVES HISTORY. BETTY COLLINS

This book should be a reading requirement for elementary classes. It makes the Revolutionary War more "real". My granddaughter loved it, too.

This story is full of excitement, suspense and descriptions of events in American history. Jed, a 12 year-old boy is rescued by a kind generous man, who is also a scam artist. Jed is able to leave druggery and cruelty to live in Boston. There he becomes aware of the priceless gift of freedom, for which the "rebels" are fighting a war with England. Walking a precarious slack-line between his rescuer's activities and careful secret work for the "rebels," jed has wonderful adventures, and learns a great deal.

I found this book while emptying shelves of books once read by my much younger brother who has been deceased since 1981. His name is in the book, with which I was unfamiliar, but I had read virtually all of Dorothy Gilman Butters Mrs. Pollifax books. What a neat treasure to find, and find a new side of a favorite author!

Excellent and inspiring. Lessons in courage, loyalty, and friendship. Those facing harsh odds “wanted freedom badly enough they made up their own ways of doing things . . . did the impossible”
This book needs to come back in print.

My 4th grader is enthralled with this book. His dad chastised me for getting an "old fashion" but I insisted because I've found some of the newer books lacking in detail and complexity.

My fourth grader is mesmerized with Jed

A very good book to read and especially for children. I'm 69 and enjoyed it myself.
