One of America's greatest investigative reporters brings to life the gripping, no-holds-barred clash of two American titans: Robert Kennedy and his nemesis Jimmy Hoffa.

From 1957 to 1964, Robert Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa channeled nearly all of their considerable powers into destroying each other. Kennedy's battle with Hoffa burst into the public consciousness with the 1957 Senate Rackets Committee hearings and intensified when his brother named him attorney general in 1961. RFK put together a "Get Hoffa" squad within the Justice Department, devoted to destroying one man. But Hoffa, with nearly unlimited Teamster funds, was not about to roll over.

Drawing upon a treasure trove of previously secret and undisclosed documents, James Neff has crafted a brilliant, heart-pounding epic of crime and punishment, a saga of venom and relentlessness and two men willing to do anything to demolish each other.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you think you know it all, you don't. James Neff has turned Bobby Kennedy's headline-making clash with Jimmy Hoffa into a psychological thriller about two tough, powerful and vengeful men who fought with all they had, exhausting both. This is not a book about a good bobby versus a bad hoffa. It is a study of two men who always got what they wanted staging a shootout on the streets of Laredo. And, as Neff tells it, there were no winners."―Seymour M. Hersh, winner of the Pulitzer Prize

"From the violence of its gripping opening to the sorrow of its close, this is an astonishing and eye-opening account of the vendetta--obsessive, intrigue-filled, hatred-tinged--that pitted Robert F. Kennedy against Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa, and nearly consumed both. Amazing stuff, really--a triumph of investigation and revelation."―
Erik Larson, author of Dead Wake

"
Vendetta is an exciting and compelling account of the titanic struggle between Robert Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa, one of the most extraordinary battles between the forces of good and evil in recent American history. With a master investigator's eye and a novelist's flair, James Neff makes the Kennedy-Hoffa duel come alive with many new historical insights and with all the blood and muscle of these two unforgettable men. If you ever wondered what it would be like to work with Robert Kennedy, the young hard-driving idealistic investigator of corruption, this book is for you."―Thomas Maier, author of When Lions Roar: The Churchills and the Kennedys

I am not a history buff but my dad was in a labor union and was very pro-union until his death – thus my curiosity about this book. The reviewers all say this book is what I would call a “good read” – I agree.

I am now very thankful that my dad wasn’t a Teamster.

I was a kid during the time period referenced in this book. So, it was a real an eye-opener to read about Teamster violence: thugs that kept local union bosses in line and the horrific assault on a member of the press. Then there were the Teamsters connections to the Mafia, the illegal wire-taps, the misuse of union funds, and how slippery Jimmy Hoffa could be the times he was prosecuted. These tactics seemed to be “business-as-usual” for Hoffa.

The federal hearings and courtrooms scenes could have been really dry but the author keeps them interesting. There are dirty tricks on both sides – Kennedy’s Get Hoffa Squad uses IRS files with a total disregard for regulations. Hoffa sets about buying a jury like it’s a normal thing. Both sides use informants and spies – double agents play one side against the other – it would make an entertaining spy novel but, it’s all true!

Robert Kennedy’s motivation for pursuing Jimmy Hoffa is a very interesting part of this book. Bobby Kennedy wasn’t a war hero like his older brothers and was looking for a way to distinguish himself from Jack Kennedy and the ghost of his late brother, Joe Kennedy. In this book, Bobby becomes a real person, driven by purposes both selfish and moral – both for the good of himself and for the good of the country.

Part of the book describes President Kennedy’s assassination from Bobby’s point of view. I found it heartbreaking to learn whom Bobby suspected of killing Jack Kennedy. There were several suspects, Hoffa was just of them. Some of them were in the government, and this, I found very sad.

“Vendetta” is the definition of “blood feud” and it is well worth reading.

Never in a million years did I imagine I would have one scintilla of empathy for Jimmy Hoffa. My knowledge of him was somewhat limited, and I thought of him as a thug who harassed the Kennedy home at Hickory Hill by having his teamsters drive by the house at all hours.

Robert F. Kennedy, on the other hand, always had my affection and admiration. Having read his own words, as well as the accounts of others, I never accepted the negative adjectives applied to him. Authors have sometimes launched into the tales of the good Bobby, or the bad Bobby, but Neff resisted that trap. Who among us could not be described in those terms? Robert Kennedy and His Times, by Arthur Schlesinger, Robert Kennedy: His Life by Evan Thomas, and Robert Kennedy in His Own Words: The Unpublished Recollections of the Kennedy Years, and last, but certainly not least, Thirteen Days, by Robert F. Kennedy, are among my personal favorites. Vendetta is written with careful attention to detail, and an absolutely thorough look at the motives that drove both men. So reading of Hoffa’s tough upbringing, his ability to connect with people, and his drive to pull himself and his family up by the bootstraps, humanizes him. Seeing the full weight of the Justice Department, absolutely determined to get him, made me cringe a little. On the other hand, his heavy hand was patently evident, and I, too, thought justice would be in order. Reading this book, reminded me of a boxing match with Kennedy in one corner and Hoffa in another.

"Vendetta" is a great read about two outsized American personalities from the last century and their no holds barred battles starting with the 1957 Senate hearings of the Labor Rackets Committee through Hoffa's 1964 jury tampering conviction in Tennessee. RFK and Hoffa are both fascinating figures and there is tremendous surface area on both of them, but Neff deftly utilizes a trove of newly declassified files and interviews to supplement other source material to focus "Vendetta" into an easily digestible and mostly chronological account.

These two men inspire much passion and inevitably their respective champions will quibble with any critical assessments of them. However, Neff does an admirable job of covering both of them objectively. For instance, Neff points to RFK's lack of knowledge about unions and rackets as well as his inexperience as a trial lawyer while working on the Senate hearings. This was evident in some of his less than helpful questioning of Hoffa and witnesses in the hearings. RFK has a short temper and Neff leaves the reader to decide whether this in part resulted in his zealous pursuit of Hoffa, in some cases with less than compelling evidence. As AG, RFK ordered many questionable tactics to "Get Hoffa" as one of his special Justice Department teams was called. Several of these tactics would later be ruled unconstitutional (in separate cases unrelated to Hoffa) and demonstrate Kennedy as someone willing to push the boundaries of legality to convict Hoffa.

On the other hand, Hoffa's accomplishments in advancing the cause of a Teamsters Union of more than 1M members is given its just due. However, Hoffa had a lot of baggage and Neff fairly portrays him for the ruthless and criminal person that he was. While Hoffa may have helped many Teamsters, his main focus was on building his power while enriching those closely connected to him and destroying anyone that got in his way. I came away impressed that Neff let the record speak more for Hoffa and his shortcomings that subjectively taking even more shots at him.

For anyone who is interested in either of these two men, the clash of personalities or a time long ago when corruption and the mob were inextricably linked to the labor movement, this is a worthwhile read.

The book shows that, although Hoffa had done some illegal acts, Kennedy pulled some illegal acts to get him convicted of the jury tampering charge.
