A blue jay building a nest outside his window prompts John Berendt to find his camera and record the familiar, yet always fascinating sequence of events that will unfold, from eggs being laid to chicks emerging and trying to fly. Children and adults alike will be astonished at the adventurous spirit of one particularly curious young blue jay as he ventures into the world. The author of the best-selling Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil brings his narrative skill to this up-close and delightfully informal account of an event that recurs each spring.

The son of two writers, John Berendt grew up in Syracuse, New York. He earned a B.A. in English from Harvard University, where he worked on the staff of The Harvard Lampoon. After graduating in 1961, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing. Berendt has written for David Frost and Dick Cavett, was editor of New York magazine from 1977 to 1979, and wrote a monthly column for Esquire from 1982 to 1994.

Berendt first traveled to Savannah in the early 1980s, when he realized that he could fly there for a three-day weekend for the price of “a paillard of veal served on a bed of wilted radicchio” [p. 24] in one of New York’s trendier restaurants. Over the ensuing eight years his visits became more frequent and extended, until he was spending more time in Savannah than in New York.

Part of the appeal, Berendt says, lay in the city’s penchant for morbid gossip: “People in Savannah don’t say, ‘Before leaving the room, Mrs. Jones put on her coat.’ Instead, they say, 'Before leaving the room, Mrs. Jones put on the coat that her third husband gave her before he shot himself in the head.” (Entertainment Weekly, 3/11/94, p. 52)

Since the publication and unprecedented success of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Berendt has become a Savannah celebrity and was even presented with the key to the city. “I took it down to City Hall one night to see if it would work, but it didn't.” (Syracuse Post Standard, 4/5/1994)

To this day Berendt's first book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, remains one of my favorites. It's the only book I've read more than once. Like many, I even visited Savannah in '97 because of it. I just found out about this book a few days ago before its release and had to have a copy even though it's for kids.

I love to photograph birds and flowers in my own yard and have often thought about putting them together into a story or a book. Berendt has done just that with a simple story about a couple of blue jays who raised three babies on the balcony outside his office window.

Berendt watched them and photographed the babies as they grew and left the nest, and its obvious that he got many hours of pleasure by doing so. The book is a kindred tale of that family of blue jays, with a few simple important lessons thrown in which parents will appreciate. The book has a colorful appeal and I love the photo-album feel of it with the real-life photos.

If you have a young one who loves birds, this is a great gift for them. Or, if you are like me and you are just a Berendt fan or young at heart, then you will definitely want to add this book to your shelf. I will definitely be sharing it with others and reading it again and again.

I raised a baby blue jay years ago and could not imagine the joy he would bring into my world. I named him Liberace because he would accompany me vocally when I played the piano, as well as mimic ringing phones, barking dogs, and other animals residing on my ranch in Bartlesville. Amazon's book, My Baby Blue Jays, by Berendt has a prominent place on my piano now. Berendt has captured the essence of this incredible species. Thank you, Amazon, for its introduction. I was expecting much more of a storyline, even though it is a childrens book. I have read John Berrendt's other
books, which were most excellent. And thought this was just a very lazy written text with barely any thought
put into the words. The pictures were very good and interesting to see the blue jays choice of home. And
that could have been made into a really interesting story.

My third grader loves blue jays and I was happy to find this book. Read the author's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" as a result of buying this book. Love it!

This is a great book. I ordered this book because I volunteer at a local school to tutor children in reading. The child I help likes animals of all kinds and this turned out to be the perfect book. I would recommend the seller to anyone.

We borrowed this book on a vacation and both my 4 and 6 year old boys loved it and wanted it read to them nightly. It's a cute story that also teaches them a bit about nature. Well written and a pleasure for grown-ups to read.

As one who raised Blue Jays at a young age, I was very disappointed with this story. Totally lacking in depth, and misses the mark for bird lovers. And it was packaged in such a way that it came dented and folded and unworthy to present as a gift.
