Isaac Komnenos Porphyrogennetos, Walking the Line in Twelfth‑Century Byzantium, 2025
The article presents some observations and thoughts on the prose encomium that Theodoros Prodromos wrote for the porphyrogennetos sebastokrator Isaac Komnenos, brother of emperor John II Komnenos. 1. Prodromos constructed and advertised an ideologically charged portrait for Isaac. 2. The text that has come down to us was likely edited by Prodromos himself sometime after it was first composed. 3. This encomium was not the first work Prodromos composed for Isaac.

This article, which was written jointly with the Indonesian demographer, Riwanto Tirtosudarmo, formerly of the Research Centre for Society and Culture of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PMB-LIPI), who did the lion's share of the research. It looks at political developments during current Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi's) second and final term in office (2019-24), concentrating on domestic politics. Taking the complex and volatile nature of politics in Indonesia as a starting point, it reviews the first three years (2019-22) of Jokowi's second administration covering the period 20 October 2019 to 31 December 2022, and highlights the successes and failures of his leadership as Indonesia went through the Covid-19 pandemic, and confronted the global uncertainties caused by Russia's 24 February invasion of Ukraine and the unfolding cataclysm of climate change. Given that previous scholars such as David Bourchier, Elena Valdameri and Vedi Hadiz have all argued that Indonesia has been drifting towards authoritarianism during the previous decade (2010-20), this article takes their arguments as a starting point by setting the country's authoritarian turn in a wider historical context. It looks at the key drivers in Indonesian politics and society today concluding by considering Indonesia's political prospects as the country prepares to enter the decisive presidential election year of 2024.
Abstract: The thrust of this study was to examine the main explanatory variables for the rapid teachers’ turn over in public secondary schools in Mbeere South Sub-County, Embu County Kenya. The study was premised on in investment Human Capital Theory, proposed by Becker (1993). The objectives of the study were threefold, namely to: analyse school management policies, the attitude of teachers, and personal characteristics of teachers on rate of turnover among teachers in public secondary schools in Mbeere sub- county, Embu County. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. Combinations of purposive and random sampling techniques were used to select 29 principals and 120 teachers yielding a total sample size of 149 participants. A questionnaire, piloted prior to data collection to determine its validity and reliability, was used as the main research instrument. In-depth interview with principals corroborated and complimented data generated through questionnaires. The main findings were that the teacher turnover was high and fluctuating having increased from 4.27% in 2009 to 8.21%, in 2010 and marginally decreased to 7.2% in 2011. The main reasons for the high teachers’ turn over were: job dissatisfaction among teachers as results of poor motivation and remuneration, limited avenues for promotions and professional growth due to unsupportive school and government policies. It was recommends that the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Education and Salaries and Remuneration Commission should put in place functional teacher professional development strategies and enhanced remuneration initiatives to enhance their efficiency, productivity and reduce current turnover; amongst others .(249 words). Key Words: Teacher turnover, professional development, teacher motivation, retention, public secondary schools, Mbeere sub-county, Embu County, Kenya.

Ling and Stos-Gale (above, p. 206) end their study on a safe, if rather vague, note: “[w]e could, perhaps, consider the maritime-themed rock art depictions [of ships and copper oxide ingots] as records of travellers’ tales, where representations of reality mingle with myths, magic and sailors' stories”. Yes, perhaps we could, since at least two of the ingot depictions (Kville 156:1 at Torsbo, Norrköping) look strikingly similar—as the authors note—to the ‘pillow ingots’ (Kissenbarren) known from the Mediterranean world. Or, perhaps, we could remain more cautious before even broaching the idea of interconnectedness between Late Bronze Age Scandinavia and the eastern Mediterranean. Such a suggestion requires a lot more faith in the basic arguments of Kristiansen and Larsson (2005)—namely, that Europe and the Mediterranean formed a massive, open network through which warrior elites and others travelled at will—than I am able to muster. For Kristiansen and Larsson, cultural contact ...

The importance of honey bees to the world economy far surpasses their contribution in terms of honey production; they are responsible for up to 30% of the world's food production through pollination of crops. Since fall 2006, honey bees in the U.S. have faced a serious population decline, due in part to a phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which is a disease syndrome that is likely caused by several factors. Data from an initial study in which investigators compared pathogens in honey bees affected by CCD suggested a putative role for Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus, IAPV. This is a single stranded RNA virus with no DNA stage placed taxonomically within the family Dicistroviridae. Although subsequent studies have failed to find IAPV in all CCD diagnosed colonies, IAPV has been shown to cause honey bee mortality. RNA interference technology (RNAi) has been used successfully to silence endogenous insect (including honey bee) genes both by injection and feeding. Moreover, RNAi was shown to prevent bees from succumbing to infection from IAPV under laboratory conditions. In the current study IAPV specific homologous dsRNA was used in the field, under natural beekeeping conditions in order to prevent mortality and improve the overall health of bees infected with IAPV. This controlled study included a total of 160 honey bee hives in two discrete climates, seasons and geographical locations (Florida and Pennsylvania). To our knowledge, this is the first successful large-scale real world use of RNAi for disease control.
