Academic Performance of Student Having OFW Mother A Research Study Presented to the Faculty of Buso National High School Brgy. Buso, Mati City, Davao Oriental, Philippines 8200 By: Geneveive T. Buanat In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Practical Research I Chapter I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Everyone have the right to dream that someday they can got out from misery of life. With it, some of them or most of them make decision that would eventually change their life. Filipino workers especially the OFW Mother will also consider the affiliated and consequences of this decision. As the years go by, a lot of work has been offered to different countries with a big salary, which make the mother venture with and leave their family especially their children. This study is made to understand the performance, specifically the academic performance of students without the guidance of the mother or having absentee of a mother and how important the guidance of the mother is. In this study, it shows how mother important to help guide, teach, and lead their children become a good person not only to its family but most importantly to the people surround her/him. It would never be denied to anyone that a child needs support and guidance from their mother and also discipline to be motivated. It is the mother's responsibility and duty to take care of their children, it is very hard to the students to have no one to guide particularly in their studies. At their stage, they still need someone to teach them and lead them and it is better to learn from a mother. Nowadays, a lot of students live without guidance and presence of their mother by certain reasons and some studies stated that this will truly affects the child not only psychologically but also socially and academically. In Barangay Buso, City of Mati, Davao Oriental in which there are students of Buso National High School with absentee mother. In the world today, people cannot be avoided this kind of situation because of life difficulties or maybe of the circumstances. Some reasons why this happen is due to financial aspect like mother they need to go abroad hoping that they can ease the burden to its family by working abroad and earning money abroad. Many Filipinos are employed as educators, sealers, medical professionals, production and technical staff, etc. all over the world. Additionally, many domestic workers are sought after because Filipinos are known for care giving and patience. The rising flow of OFW's is unavoidable because Filipino's need to survive, even if this would mean separation from their families Quinto(2004). According to Topor, et,.al.(n.d) "Mother's involvement in the academic performance of the child is consistently found to be positively associated. The present study examines two potential mechanisms which is the child's perception of cognitive and the quality of the student-teacher relationship. In the study of Caguio(2014), Overseas Filipino community is important sector of the Philippines not only because of their contribution to the economy through remittances but also through their participation in national issues. Statement of the Problem The purpose of this phenomenological study is to determine the academic performance of students having OFW mother specifically the students of Buso National High School. At this stage in the research, this will be the result which used to be the basis to know the importance of a mother's guidance in terms of academic performance of the child and effects of having OFW Mother. Objectives of the Study This study conducted to identify the academic performance of those students having OFW Mother. This will answer the following questions: a. What are the effects of having OFW mother or absentee mother to the academic performance of students? b. How important the guidance of the mother in terms of academic performance Delimitations? The beneficiaries of this research are the students, OFW mother, and Teachers. It will help the students to understand and to be aware about the situations especially those who have OFW mother. This research can benefit to the OFW mother to understand clearly about the impact to the academic performance of its children upon making this kind of decisions and this will also helpful to the Teachers to understand more the situation of those students having absentee mother. Significance of the Study This study will help the students to understand the situations and be aware to its effects upon having OFW mother especially to those students who experienced or undergoes it. It also gives additional information to the mother of the students to understand the importance of its presence in terms of academic performance of her child. This will also serve as a guide for everyone about the effects of having OFW mother to the academic performance of the child. To the students, it will be beneficial for them to be more understanding about the situations and for them to be much aware. To the OFW mother, this study will serve as a reminder for them to know about the importance of its guidance and presence regarding to the academic performance of its child. To the Teacher, this research will additionally benefit to the teachers because just like others, this can help them to be aware what students are going through particularly those who had OFW mother. This will help them to understand more and open with the students. Scope and Delimitations This study will focus on the students who have an OFW mother at Buso National High School. This will focus into the effects and importance with the guidance of mother in terms to the academic performance of the students. The participant of this study are the students of Buso National High School particularly Grade 7-Love learners, Grade 7-Faith learners, Grade 8-Fortitude learners, Grade 9-Peace learners, Grade 10-Courtesy learner and Grade 11-Wisdom learners for this research to become durable and reliable. Definition of Terms Academic Performance - Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) - Guidance - Absentee - CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Since at first a lot of Filipinos worked abroad venture to get out from misery of life and wanted to help its family. As the years passed, more and more Filipinos wanted to work abroad particularly the mother even though they know the affiliated sacrifices of this decision. For those family left-behind of the OFW especially those students which would be much affected specially in their academic performance because of the absentee of their mother. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) According to Wikipedia (n.d), Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) is often referred to as Filipino migrant workers, people with Filipino Citizenship who reside in another country or overseas for just a limited period of employment. Filipino employed in different job opportunities in another country. In the study of Quinto (2004), most of the Filipino's employed as educators, sealers, medical professionals, production and staff, etc. all over the world. Foreigners aspired those Filipino workers especially those Filipino mothers because Filipino are known for caregiving and patience. Filipino's can't deny it instead they're the one promoting it, as Ragma and Molina(2018) cited that Overseas Filipino Workers(OFW) ever since is considered to as heroes of the land and many people look at to them not only because of their contribution in the economy but most importantly to their unselfish sacrifices. Academic Performance According to Sharrock (2013), Academic performance is referred to how the students perform in school courses such as social studies, history, English/ELA, sciences, and math, also "specials" or elective courses are included like arts, music, health, business and others. In addition, when people hear the word "academic performance" they bear in mind that it was a person's GPA. In several factors it indicates the academic success of the student. Standardized tests such as the SAT and CAT will help the students hold leadership positions even though they are not graduate top of their class.  Reasons of Filipino work abroad In every year millions of Filipinos travel outside the country either for work, business and liesure, education, permanent residency, and medical treatment Catipay (2014). According to Garcia (n.d), migration is a common response of Filipinos because of socio-economic problems in the Philippines. The Philippine is one of the major source of labor to various country of the world, both women and men workers in order to earn a sustainable income. In addition, Overseas migration of parents will be resulted in increasing numbers of long term separation of parents from their children Arguillas and Williams( 2010). According to Susan (2011), Filipinos work abroad with the common reason cited for the exodus of Filipinos out of the country which is the poverty. They go abroad to find work and sustain their needs as well as to their families. Filipino works abroad with affiliated reason. In the study of Natividad (2012), Filipino work abroad it may personal, financial and temporal. Working abroad is like putting your life into risk, in addition is the loneliness of being away from your family, discrimination from overseas employers and the high cost of living abroad. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Input Process Output This study deals with the importance of mother in terms of academic performance of students and the effects of OFW mother or absentee mother. The independent variable of the study is the academic performance of students with absentee mother. The data will be gathered through and one-on-one interview to those students about how importance the guidance of their mother is. The dependent variable of this study is to know the effects of having OFW mother and how important the guidance of the mother in terms of the academic performance of students. CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY Research Design I, as a researcher, want to examine the effects on the study of the learners having OFW mother and why is it important to have a mother in terms of guidance in academic performance of students. Due to the nature of the study, I decided to employ phenomenological study, using one-on-one interview with the learners who have OFW mother it is because the focus of phenomenological study is the different experiences of people or person towards some phenomenon and how those experiences interpreted by them. A phenomenological study is a study that attempts to understand the perception of people or person towards a particular situation. So, my study is fitted in phenomenological study for I will seek to understand their perception or particular situation. Respondents of the Study This study considered the learners who have OFW mother in Buso National High School particularly Grade 7-Love students, Grade 7-Faith students, Grade 8-Fortitude students, Grade 9-Peace students, Grade 10-Courtesy student and Grade 11-Wisdom students for they will be the one who will answer the questions and those questions will be based on my topic. Instruments of the Study The instrument used in this study in gathering the data is by conducting one-on-one interview to the learners who have OFW mother at Buso National High School. I will ask questions to those students that are related to my topic. CHAPTER IV RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS Effects of having OFW mother Mother's guidance Financial problem It is important only my mother had an experience of this and it is just okay for me if my mother is in the other country. Guidance of my mother is important in terms of my studies because she is the only one whom I run for to share my problems. Because if my mother don't work, I won't able go to school. Without the presence of my mother I will have the possibility to go into the wrong path. Guidance of my mother is important for me to not go into the wrong path and to be able to finish my studies. Because without my mother we won't be able to survive and we can't go to school. In order for my mother to correct my mistakes and what should be the best thing to do. Enable for me to go to school and for I will be able to live. Specially, for her to give what I want. My mother is the one who make my studies become easier despite from misery and one who help me to decide. It is important to be able to not to set aside the studies. Guidance of mother is important for me to be guided on the things that I do. It is important for you to be guided. It is important for me to never go into the wrong path which will ruin me. It is necessary to have a mother who will guide his/her students for them to be inspired and to be good in terms of their studies. It is important to have a mother because they are the one who you run to, they are also the one who gives support in terms of support. It is important to have a mother that will teach you to what is the right thing to do. It is important to have a mother to guide in your every action. It is important to have a mother that will teaches me what is need to do. For me, mother is important for I will always be guided in terms of my grades if it is okay. Because my mother is the one who I run to and tell my problems. A mother is important because they teach us on what is the right thing to do. It is important for you to be guided in every action you made. Guidance of my mother is important in terms of my studies because she will be the one who will guide me on what is not right to do and right thing to do. To never lose into the right path. Without my mother I won't able go to school anymore. Enable for you to know in everyday or time for all your action or your mistakes. For me to know what is right and what is wrong. These are the result of the one-on-one interview to the participant which are the students of Buso National High School specifically Grade 7-Love students, Grade 7-Faith students, Grade 8-Fortitude students, Grade 9-Peace students, Grade 10-Courtesy student and Grade 11-Wisdom students. Most of them answer that without the guidance of their mother they might go into the wrong path which make their life miserable and the guidance and presence of their mother is important for them to be able to be guided in every action they made. Some of them answer that their mothers go abroad enable for them to live and survive and go to school. CHAPTER V SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Summary Looking at the qualitative description of the student who are participants of the study who have an OFW mother which they said that guidance of a mother is very important especially to their academic performance. As what most of them said that they will be guided to the things that they do and for them to be aware if it is right or wrong with the help and guidance of the mother. In addition, they said that without the guidance of their mother they might go into the wrong path which made their life miserable. Most of the mother's work abroad because of financial problem, they venture it even though it's painful for them upon leaving it's loved ones just to support financially especially to the studies of its children. In this, most of the student’s longing for the presence and guidance of their mothers. We can't deny the fact that child/student need the presence and guidance of parents to be motivated. It is the mother's responsibility and duty to take care of its child and teach them to be a good and responsible one, it is very hard for the students with no one to guide we may accept it or not but it is true. Conclusion Therefore, as a student’s we should be much aware and understanding to the situations that we may encounter and be strong enough to face it and to the mother we need to be aware also to the impact to the studies of your students upon leaving them and how important your guidance and presence for them to be motivated. A mother should be the one to take care of its children, teach them on how to be a good and responsible person. They need support and love from their mother and discipline to be motivated. Recommendation I would like to recommend first to the next and future researcher who wants to pursue similar studies, explore more about the academic performance of the students, determine why the guidance of mother is important and last find more details about academic performance coming from reliable sources like recent researchers, articles, and thesis. To the students who have OFW mother, I would like to recommend that long your patience and understanding to the situations and if there's problem just seek some guidance whether it your teacher, sister/brother, father or you can make a video call to your mother. To the mother and families, this study suggests that a child/student’s needs guidance for them to be guided on what is the right thing to do. They need you by their side to help and support for them to be inspired to go to school.
