Legendary actor and politician Vijayakanth was awarded the Padma Bhushan posthumously by the Centre on Thursday (January 25). The Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief died on December 28, 2023, at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu's Chennai. His fans took to social media to take pride in this announcement and called it 'well deserved'.
VIJAYAKANTH AWARDED PADMA BHUSHAN POSTHUMOUSLY
On January 25, ahead of Republic Day, the government announced the Padma awards. Megastar Chiranjeevi, Vyjayanthimala and Mithun Chakraborty were among the list of celebrities who were awarded the Padma awards.
DMDK Chief and actor Vijayakanth was conferred with the Padma Bhushan posthumously. He was recognised for his contribution in the field of art (Tamil cinema).
Actor-politician Khushbu shared a photo of Vijayakanth and wrote, "Wish you were among us now to share our happiness on you being honoured with #PadmaBhushan (posthumously) by the Govt of India and we celebrating you. We miss you Sir. My heartfelt thanks to #GOI for recognizing Thiru #Vijaykanth 's contributions and honoring him. (sic)."
ABOUT VIJAYAKANTH
Vijayakanth was one of the most-loved actor and politicians in Tamil Nadu. He acted in 154 movies and bid goodbye to films to foray into politics.
He founded the DMDK and became a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice. He then served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
However, in the last few years, Vijayakanth battled many health issues, after which he took a step back from active political engagement.
