Pistha Movie Review : A below average mindless rural entertainer

Pistha Movie Review: Mindless comedy entertainers aren't something that we should refrain ourselves from. A few might actually help us to break-free from the monotony of life and allow us a chance at fun and laughter. But that doesn't mean you can tell stories that are absurd without any logic and have awkward one-liners that lands flat most of the time. Metro Shirish's latest outing Pistha is one such movie where one has to wait till the end to discover the director's intention and what the actually story is.

As the opening credits roll, we get to see the wedding pictures of popular celebrity couples that include Dhanush-Aishwarya, Rajini-Latha, Suriya-Jyotika and more. While that prepares us for a film that's all about wedding and the fun around it, what we get served on the plate is a different story.

In the very first scene we are introduced Saravanan aka Sandha (Metro Shirish), who is all set to get married next day morning. The interesting part is that even the groom doesn't know whom he is going to tie the knot with. His friends print posters and invitations without any name and photo of the bride which generates curiosity among the general public. Cut to flashback, we are introduced to Saravanan's early life where he plays the role of a happy-go-lucky villager who spends most of the time with his friends - Sathish and Mark Babu (Yogi Babu). They own a company called The Wedding Stoppers which plots plans to stop weddings that are against the will of the bride or the groom. They have exclusive packages for these and have created ruckus in many weddings.

As everything goes fine, Saravanan falls in love with Selvi (Mrudula Murali), a drama artiste who educates the villagers through plays. Little does he know that his job as 'wedding stopper' would land his love life in trouble. Will he leave his most-loved profession and marry Selvi or is he destined for someone else?

For the genre of a comedy entertainer, Pistha starts off well with many interesting characters coming together to stop weddings. The idea is quite interesting and there is ample amount of scope to evoke laughter. However, the one-liners by Sathish and Yogi Babu land badly and most of them are outdated, too. There are a few awkward sequences written intending to describe the protagonist's family and as opposed to the intention, they are definitely not funny .

Compared to the first half, the second half is a bit engaging. The scenes where Metro Sirish and his friends search for a right match is compiled well and the comedy here works to certain extent. The interval block in which the protagonist gets arrested in front of his girlfriend Selvi for helping Mark Babu is very amatuerish and doesn't help to connect with the characters on screen. There are no any serious conflicts or enjoyable fun sequences for us to root for the film.

Veteran comedian Senthil's cameo in the film works and it's nice to watch him on screen after years. This is composer Dharan's 25th film and the music has really helped to elevate certain sequences. Metro Sirish, Mrudula Murali and Arundhathi Nair (who plays Mrudula's sister in the film) have all played their part well.

Pistha will definitely work for you if want to watch a film keeping your logical mind in the next seat.
