STYLES & MAKERS / TOBY & CHARACTER JUGS

MAKERS OF TOBY & CHARACTER JUGS
within the museum

Included in the Museum is a collection of Antique 18th and early 19th Century English Toby and Character Jugs. Most of these jugs can not be attributed to any one maker, as generally no marks were provided anywhere on the jugs to identify such.  Collectors often identify these 200 year old jugs by the kind of style (Thin Man, Martha Gunn, Hearty Good Fellow, etc.), finish (creanware, prattware, pearlware) or by the area of England in which they may have been produced (Staffordshire, Leeds, Portobello, Yorkshire). Exceptions to the above are those few jugs which can fairly confidently be attributed to one of the following Staffordshire potters:

• John Astbury
• John Voyez
• Josiah Wedgwood
• Thomas Whieldon
• Aaron Wood
• Ralph Wood I
• Ralph Wood II
• Enoch Wood

All of these styles, finishes, production areas and individual potters are represented in the Antique section of the Museum.

Beginning in the later part of the 19th Century, some Toby makers began to identify their products origin on the base of the jugs. This became commonplace after the passage of the McKinley Tarrif Act in 1890, which required all goods imported into the United States to indicate the country of origin on it. In doing so, potteries began to add their name or trademark to the base of the jugs in addition to “Made in England” or “Made in Germany”, etc.  This was a great boon to collectors, who were now able to put together their collections by maker (or in some cases country).

Beginning with those originating in the late 19th Century, the Toby and Character Jugs in the American Toby Jug Museum are arranged in collections by makers. A list of those makers by country of origin is provided below. Over 200 makers from more that 30 different countries are represented in the Museum. Major collections which are virtually complete are identified as follows:

20 or more jugs by this maker (*)
50 or more jugs by this maker (**)
