One of our favorite moments from Monday night's inaugural InStyle Awards was all the giggling, gushing, and gramming that went on between BFFs Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow. As guests at the Getty Center in L.A. dined on arugula salads, flat iron steaks, and parmesan truffle fondue, Hudson, in a dress by Giles Deacon, spoke of the enduring sartorial appeal of our first-ever Style Icon honoree.
"From the first moment I laid eyes on this woman, it was love at first sight," she recalled before presenting a Schiaparelli-clad Paltrow with the Donald Robertson-designed award. "I was shopping, I was 17, it was Tracey Ross at Tracey Ross on Sunset Plaza, which I’m sure some of you in this room remember. And I hear a voice coming from one of the dressing rooms. So I peek over, and there she was.

"Late '90s Gwyneth. Slip dress, Tom Ford, Gucci red suit, the pixie cut that shocked the world—Gwyneth Paltrow," she continued. "So I kept my cool. I tried to keep my cool. Then, I immediately grabbed a bunch of clothes, and I ran over to the dressing room area, because I had to see what she was buying." Hudson remembers exactly what Paltrow purchased because she later bought the same thing. "I don’t even think I told you this story," she said to Paltrow and the crowd. "They were Katayone Adeli pants. We all remember those. And a spaghetti strap tank."

For her part, Paltrow told the crowd how equally enamored she is with her friend. "We’re sort of like sisters," she began, "because we both are half-Jewish actresses with actress mothers, who are a little complicated, who we love very much and want to fall in their footsteps, and we both married rock stars from the same town, basically, in Exeter f—ing England, in the middle of nowhere."
