Synopsis of Biological Oceanography. This course covers the essentials of major oceanic ecosystems. There is an emphasis on marine plankton, their patterns of distribution, productivity and species interactions, the structure and function of marine microbial food webs, role of oceans in global carbon cycle, human impacts on marine ecosystems, current research and problems in oceanography.

The laboratory portion of the course covers measurement and analysis techniques commonly used in oceanography. This includes laboratory work as well as research cruises Narragansett Bay.
