There aren't many thriving girl groups but the world has two quartets slaying the game. U.K.'s Little Mix and America's Fifth Harmony continue to serve up some epic girl power in 2017. Little Mix won U.K.'s "X Factor" in 2011, and now they have four successful albums under their belt. While Camila Cabello went solo in late 2016, Fifth Harmony persevered as a quartet — adding the smash "Down" to their collection of hits. OK, sure Fifth Harmony didn't win the U.S. version of "X Factor" in 2012, but they made it to the top three, and how many other acts from U.S. version of that show can you name? Probably none at the moment.
Fifth Harmony gas filled the void for an American girl group with international appeal and success. They not only have worldwide hits "Work from Home" and "Worth It," but a string of other successful fierce anthems: "Miss Movin' ON," "Bo$$," "Sledgehammer" and "That's My Girl."
Fifth Harmony went from cute, young pop singers to empowered pop divas. But they also have gone through a lineup change with Camila embarking on her solo career in 2017. The four remaining ladies are just now gaining momentum again, but they have already persevered as a quartet with a string of awards, epic performances, a new hit single and an upcoming third studio album. Although Camila was significant to the group's success, the quartet definitely has been "better together" ever since late 2016.
Even with your typical American girl group drama, 5H has managed to successfully continue the legacy of their foremothers (The Supremes, En Vogue, Destiny's Child, TLC, etc.). Unfortunately, even with worldly success, Little Mix has only found moderate success on the U.S. charts. But 5H has broken into the U.K. and many other pop markets, embodying the fierceness of previous American girl groups from the '90s and '00s.
Genius has some notable lyrics to 5H's summertime jam, "Down," which was their first hit as a quartet.
