WEIGHT-LIFTER Maria Liku could become the best individual athlete in the Olympic Games in an individual event.
Liku, who had taken a break from the sport for some time now, is placed eighth at the London Olympics could possibly move to the fifth place. The International Olympic Committee and together with International Weightlifting Federation are conducting drug tests.
Fiji Weightlifting Federation vice-president Christopher Yee said: "Maria Liku who finished in eighth place at the London Olympics could possibly move up to a high of fifth place, once all due process by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) have been completed," he said in a press release.
"Maria's eighth place finish is already the best placed individual Fiji athlete at any Olympic Games from any sport.
"The possibility of her moving up to 5th place will be an added achievement."
Yee said the IWF had announced three athletes in the women's 63kg weight category have been implicated in the London 2012 Olympic retests.
"The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has announced that The IWF revealed their positive samples from the retests in June and July, but the final outcome of their cases will only be confirmed with IOC and IWF completing the full procedures," he added.
"It comes after the IWF executive board ruled that countries which produce three or more anti-doping rule violations in the combined re-analysis of samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics face being banned.
"Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine are all facing the prospect on a ban, should all outstanding cases be confirmed."
