Moonlight was named best film of the year by the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, with the movie's director, Barry Jenkins, named as best director.

The drama — which earned six Golden Globe nominations Monday morning — won six awards overall in the organization's weekend voting, including Jenkins for best adapted screenplay (tied with Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea). Mahershala Ali was named best supporting actor, with cinematographer Joshua Laxton and editors Joi McMillon and Nate Sanders also being singled out for their work on the movie.

Other acting honors went to Fences' Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (best actor and supporting actress) and Elle's Isabelle Huppert (best actress).

In addition, the SFFCC's annual Special Citation Award for an underappreciated independent film went to Anna Rose Holmer's The Fits, while the group's Marlon Riggs Award for courage and innovation in the Bay Area film community went to Joshua Grannell.
