Criminal prosecutions for tax evasion have soared over the past year by nearly 60 per cent as a result of the taxman’s policy of targeting middle-class professionals and small businesses.

The self-employed — from lawyers to plumbers and decorators — are at increasing risk of a prison sentence or criminal record as a result of the Revenue’s policy to aim for “soft targets”, figures released today show.

In all, 1,258 individuals were convicted of tax evasion or fraud in 2014-15, up by nearly 800 compared with the year before and easily beating the taxman’s target for the year of 1,165 prosecutions.
