Twinning of Burford, Oxfordshire and Potenza Picena, Macerata, Italy.

In September 2001, the then Mayor of Burford, Cllr Keith Davies, and of Potenza Picena, Signor Mario Morgoni, signed the following document in Italy in front of a delegation of Councillors from Burford and citizens from Potenza Picena. The British Ambassador to the Vatican was also present.

At a later ceremony in Burford, the formalities were repeated and Signor Morgoni was given the Honorary Freedom of the Town of Burford.

The Mayor and Citizens of Burford and the Mayor and Commune of Potenza Picena, having agreed by resolution to form a twinning arrangement, firmly resolve:

• To honour this twinning arrangement by establishing and maintaining friendly relations with each other;
• To foster and develop mutual understanding and respect between the people of Burford and the people of Potenza Picena;
• To encourage and assist youth and all classes of persons from Burford and Potenza Picena;
• To communicate and exchange visits with each other, thereby developing human and cultural relations and establishing a firm foundation for future understanding, respect and friendship between the people of Burford and Potenza Picena for all time.

Since 2001 there have been regular exchanges between the Burford Singers and the Santo Juliano Choir, Burford School Orchestra and pupils from the School. Scouts, football teams and hockey teams have visited Italy and many private visits have been made and lasting friendships formed.
