Ubisoft details Far Cry 3 closed beta

Ubisoft details Far Cry 3 closed beta photo

For two weeks this summer, 360 and PS3 users will have the opportunity to play through Far Cry 3's multiplayer beta. Ubisoft has detailed some of what you can expect. Up to 16 players can merrily shoot the crap out of each other in one of six playable classes. Various modes and maps will be available, including Firestorm mode, where one team attempts to douse the other's base in gasoline. Pyromaniacs rejoice! Hundreds of upgrades and customization options will also be shown off, so plenty to do for the tinkerers out there.

It's a closed beta, so invitation only, unfortunately. Buying Ghost Recon: Future Soldier from GameStop on May 22 will net you an invitation, as will being a member of the GameStop Power-Up Rewards scheme. You can redeem the codes on the GameStop site from May 22. Since only letting customers of a redundant shop into the beta for a modern game is completely absurd, there are other ways you can get an invite. You can nab a beta key on Facebook, but there's only 500 available. Ubisoft will also be giving away keys via other methods soon, so keep an eye on their site and Twitter if you care.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

16 players, meh. So can anyone recommend Starhawk? How's that game going?
I'd be more excited if it were, for some odd reason, a closed single player beta.
I don't give a fuck about this games multiplayer. The level editor in Far Cry 2 was cool but the games main draw was single player, it's one of the most important games to be developed in recent years.
"For two weeks this summer, 360 and PS3 users will have the opportunity to play through Far Cry 3's multiplayer beta."

Good, atleast PC Gamers won't try to pirate it like they did with the Diablo III beta.
@Mithrot

If you don't think console piracy happens, then I have a bridge to sell you.
@pedrovay2003

Yes, it happens, far more commonly than most people think, even to the extent where console games are released weeks ahead of the PC ones (Halo Reach, Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3, etc).

However, that argument weighs alot less then you'd think. It happens far less than PC piracy due to the difficulty of pirating games for a console due to a number of factors that I can only briefly go over in a Destructoid comment section. The consumer base for the 360 and PS3 is broad and the chance that a typical gamer knows how to do it properly on a modded console is significantly less likely than a PC user who is expected to know the basics of how the OS works and the basic applications for it (Torrents, etc).

PC users who can run and tweak modern games are also more likely to know how to pirate them. Large, competitive "Scene" grops are set-up to see who can release the best quality "release" of highly anticipated games. AlterIWNet has shown even the dumbest of PC idiots can pirate games even if they don't know what a config is.

This happened with AC2, Crysis 2 Leak, MW3, Diablo 3, etc and thus having FC3 files be available before the game was released would create Day 0 nightmares if cracked to the point where even Steamworks couldn't save it.

Its pretty obvious that consoles are the lead platform for Farcry 3, even if the PC version would probably look gorgeous and the beta would help iron things out on a controlled and closed system.

tl;dr Its just better this way.
Just shut up, nobody wants to talk about piracy on an article about a Far Cry 2 closed beta. If you wanna get attention post a funny gif or something.
@josmeister

"Just shut up"

"Destructoid is an open discussion community."

You are disrespectful.
I might have been disrespectful and if so I am sorry but I am really tired of people trying to derail every damned topic towards a discussion about piracy, DRM, second hand sales and online passes. There's only so much that can be said about these topics and most of it has been said in a better and more complete way than can ever be expressed in a stupid comment thread before. So yeah, what I mean to say, is please shut up,good sir.
@josmeister

"I might have been disrespectful"

You were.

"and if so I am sorry"

Apology accepted.

"words words words words"

Whatever.
I honestly couldn't care less about the multiplayer for this. The single player, on the other hand...

SEMEN
Luvely how you want people to be respectful then just shit over their polite response. Not sure how long you've been over here but that attitude is not really enjoyed by the community.
I think the PC version Should have a beta, if only for the fact that due to the different hardware configurations chances of problems that really need to be fixed are a lot higher.

Back to the discussion on platforms: while its true that the market of the pc is smaller than the console market and that there is piracy on pc it has been proven time and time again that partially because of that Lazy ports don't sell while games making an effort out of their pc release sell a lot better, Just look at how Alan Wake outsold the 360 version on pc in no time at all, just look how ubisoft crashes and burns on the pc. Its a big part due to how they treat the platform, if you treat the pc like shit you can expect the game to sell like shit in return while if you actually take in a effort, (this is no warranty) the chances of good sales are significantly higher. I also mean constant online drm as part of a bad port btw.

One must also not forget that pc games tend to sell at a slower rate than console games, console games sell big then the sales drop again and the game is only to find in the budget corner while on pc games can sell for significantly longer due to digital distribution and often will do so.

Conclusion Ignoring the PC with sloppy ports may actually cost you money so even though it may not be the most selling platform taking the effort to do it right is worth it just in increased sales.
Who even is josmeister?
another console port to PC then...sadness...lets hope planetside 2 delivers (is there an emoticon for hope?).
@josmeister Actually I kind of enjoyed it. I found it quite amusing really. Then again I wouldn't really consider myself a part of the Destructoid "community" since most of the comment threads on this website make me sick. No offence. On the other hand, I haven't been regularly viewing any other gaming websites for a while. (I wonder why...)
How do I get a beta key on FaceBook??? I looked and couldn't find...
I Want to be one of those 500 PPL!!! :))

Alan Wake sold so well on PC because like the Battlefield and so many others these days, the PC has more power, and can produce better quality graphics. I'm not even sure if you can get Alan Wake in 3D on Xbox 360. Meh... If you have the $$ for a rig like that, why steal the game? LOL
