Air France plans to take a 54.8% stake in Frances's UTA, which would give it control of French domestic carrier Air Inter and make the state-owned (lag-carrier the second largest in Europe. Air France already has virtual control of fourth French carrier TAT. The airline is a founder partner, together with Lufthansa, Iberia and SAS, in Amadeus, a computerised distribution system involving 13 airlines, which became operational in 1989. During 1988 the company established two new subsidi aries, EuroBerlin France (jointly owned with Lufthansa), to operate scheduled passenger services from Berlin to points in West Germany and Sodexi, an international express cargo company. In 1989 the airline expanded its route network by adding the following destinations: Antalya, Bari, Bergen, Courchevel, Dubrovnic, In nsbruck, Kilimanjaro and Palermo. In addition, four new domestic routes were operated linking Paris with Bor deaux, Lyon, Montpellier and Nantes. Air Gabon (Compagnie Nationale Air Gabon), the country's flag-carrier, operates an extensive network of scheduled domestic passenger and cargo services from its Libreville base. International services are operated to Douala, Lome, Abidjan, Cotonou, Bamako, Abidjan, Dakar, Malabo, Bangui, Kinshasa, Pointe Noire, Lagos, Rome, Geneva, Nice, Marseille and Paris. The airline was designated as the national carrier in 1968 and in May 1977 Gabon withdrew from the Air Afrique consortium and began operating its own international services. Air Inter (Lignes Aeriennes Interieures) the French domestic carrier, operates an extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services. The major part of the company's traffic is derived from 29 routes radiating from Paris, although a large number of transregional services are also provided. Since 1987 Air France and UTA's parent company, Les Chargeurs, have each increased their shareholdings in the airline, with the latter now holding 35.8% and Air France 37%. The company is prohibited by law from operating outside France but has recently concluded an agreement with the flag-carrier to serve Ibiza and Madrid using an Air France flight number. In exchange. Air France now operates services from Paris (CDG) to Marseilles, using an Air Inter flight number. Air Inter owns 55% of the night freight carrier Intercargo Service, which it set up in 1987 in conjunction with Europe Aero Service and Banque Paribas. History: Air Inter was formed in 1954.
