PlanetSide 2 beta delayed

Sony pushes back beta start date for PC shooter to "Friday or Monday" to give more time for polishing and testing.

A beta for PlanetSide 2 was supposed to launch early this week, but it has been delayed to "Friday or Monday," Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) president John Smedley has tweeted.

Originally scheduled to arrive on Monday or Tuesday, the beta for the free-to-play PC shooter was pushed back to give the development team additional time to polish and test it, said Smedley.

"We have some stuff we need to make sure is awesome," he wrote.

Sony first opened beta sign-ups for PlanetSide 2 back in December 2011, and gamers interested in test-driving the game can register today for access through the game's official website.

PlanetSide 2 is successor to SOE's original subscription-based MMO shooter released in 2003. The studio is hoping to dramatically expand on that game's scope with this sequel, which will run on the newly built Forgelight Engine.

The game will be a "reimagining" of the original, which chronicled a futuristic conflict on the embattled planet of Auraxis between three different factions: the Terran Republic, the New Conglomerate, and the Vanu Sovereignty. Players will advance through battle ranking levels while acquiring equipment certifications for both different weapon types and different classes of vehicle.

Loved the original Planetside, but was the original an MMO by today's standards?  I mean, it had a quite limited amount of players per map (64?), but was considered an MMO because it had a leveling system and the ability to improve your character and equipment and persist those improvements.  Now though, it seems most FPS games have that functionality.  I wonder then what does it take to consider this an MMO today?  Is 64 players per map really MASSIVELY multiplayer?

Raeldor I think the limit for each continent (map) was 399 ish. The maps were too big for only 64 players.

reimen Wow, was it really that many?  That's pretty impressive technology for back then!  I never remember seeing that many in one game, but maybe over a large enough area it was hard to tell.  I suppose that's how they can keep it fast enough to be a twitched-based shooter with that many players, by making sure the game mechanic spreads the players out over the map.

Raeldor  reimen Just a few weeks ago, I was running with my outfit, and we had over a hundred members, all working together in a small area.

Tylendal  reimen Wow, that's a lot of players for a small area.  I'd love to know how they can have that many players and still keep it fast enough to be an FPS.

At least we're seeing more news on Gamespot. I was starting to wonder if they were intentionally ignoring Planetside 2 to cater to a console crowd or something.

Maybe SOE will send out more beta invitations during the delay? That will be even more awesome than the awesomeness they are working on.

I think everyone who is into FPS games and isn't completely tied to CoD/MW is at least keeping an eye on this game.  Personally, I'm keeping both eyes on it with a side hope of squeezing into the beta.

Judging from some of the other comments, I'm not the only one.
