XANALYS Link Explorer

Data Analysis and Visualization

Link Explorer is a desktop software application that allows you to apply powerful query and analysis techniques to your data, presenting the answers in a range of visualisations such as link charts, time lines, maps and reports.

By modelling data as set of objects (people, places, events, etc.) and the associations that exist between them, Link Explorer provides clarity to complex data sets.

Connect directly to an existing database or use Link Explorer's import features to collate data from different sources. Link Explorer will allow you slice and dice your data, pulling interesting sets of results from one chart into another, or drilling into key objects to reveal associated information.

Link Explorer expands the analytical environment by its integration with two Microsoft tools widely used by analysts and investigators – Bing Mapping and Excel. Moving data between these tools has never been easier, giving users a new perspective on their data.

How Link Explorer gives you control over your Data:

  • Represents your data as visual entities. View data as real world objects, not rows and columns.
  • Fits your data. Domain independent and works with a variety of data formats.
  • Fuse data together. Import different formats/sources into a common model.
  • No complicated Query language. Build queries using the same entities that appear in your charts.
  • Switch between Visualisations types with a mouse click.  Link, time and spatial charts emphasize different elements of your data.
  • Reveal hidden links. Discover what you don’t know.
  • Share results. Choose from different export options.

Query
  • Use a simple graphical interface to construct a query
  • Ask questions in the language of the investigator
  • Increase the precision of your queries/filters by adding constraints
  • Create Example Queries with simple constraints for easy execution of common queries
  • Organise your queries and example queries into folders
Visualize
  • Choose a chart type that allows clearest intrepretation of the data
  • Alter the graphical appearance of objects on an a chart depending on properties or attributes
  • Wide range of charts: tabular, hierarchy, link, timelines, maps, clock charts etc.
  • Select data from one chart type and move it into another
Explore
  • Select a chart object and drill-down to explore its links and neighbours
  • View the path of objects and links that connects two objects
  • View the attribute data associated with an object or link
Input and Manipulate Data
  • Augment the database with new objects and links connected to existing data
  • Drag and drop new objects onto a chart using the QuickChart Toolbox
  • Modify the attribute data associated with an object or link
Merge
  • Merge objects on a chart and consequently the data source
  • Import data from different sources into a single repository
  • Flexibly specify how objects are automatically merged during import
Export
  • Print complex charts
  • Export charts to ChartViewer; a free tool that allows basic chart navigation
  • Export chart objects to Excel
Microsoft Integration
  • Export data from any Link Explorer chart to Microsoft Excel
  • Link Explorer toolbar/ribbon in Microsoft Excel allows you to create Link Explorer charts
  • Geocode data and create pin-point charts in Bing Maps directly from Link Explorer or Excel
Integrate
  • Has comprehensive COM API allowing integration into a larger solution
  • Available as a ActiveX control for embedding
  • Integrates with standard mapping applications

Xanalys Link Designer is a desktop product that contains all the features of Xanalys Link Explorer together with a modelling tool that enables a user to create a Link Explorer “Template” which is customized to a particular domain.

The template definition includes:

  • The set of objects and links available for analysis in the users' domain. This is the object model of the domain. It defines the detailed attributes of the various objects and links.
  • The structural details of the underlying data source. This is the data model of the repository of the domain information and the target of Link Explorer's analytical queries.
  • The mapping between the data model and the object model. This model is used by Link Explorer to execute queries against a data source and create the object and links for analysis and visualization.
  • The rules and style settings used to display objects and links using the powerful visualization features available in Link Explorer. This is the presentation model and it defines the icons, labels, photographs, colors, shapes etc. which are used to present information in the various Link Explorer charts.

The template is a key customization component that allows Link Explorer to be applied to any domain and data model. Standard Link Explorer is distributed with a number of templates which support analysis in many common domains. However, if an organization has specific requirements associated with a particular domain or data source then a specific template can be created using Link Designer. Any template created with Link Designer can be distributed across the organization to analysts using the standard Link Explorer product. This allows all users to work with a common, customized analytical model. If the organization deals with multiple domains or data sources then multiple templates may be created and distributed.

The minimum hardware requirements to run Link Explorer are:

  • 1.4 GHz processor computer
  • 512 MBytes RAM
  • 250 MBytes free disk space for installation (Additional disk space will be required for external database storage).
  • SVGA min (1024 x 768 resolution)
  • USB Port (for dongle licensing)
  • CD-ROM drive or network access (for installation)

For better performance, we recommended the following hardware:

  • At least 2 GHz processor computer
  • At least 3 GBytes RAM
  • 500 MBytes free disk space for installation (Additional disk space will be required for external database storage).
  • SXGA capable graphics card (1280 x1024 resolution) or better
  • USB Port (for dongle licensing)
  • CD-ROM drive or network access (for installation)

Supported Desktop operating systems:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2 or 3)
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2003

Database Connectivity:

  • For external database connectivity, appropriate DBMS client software and ODBC drivers will need to be loaded on each workstation.

"This is the best approach I've yet encountered, because everything was inclusive and nothing exclusive. Watson [XANALYS Link Explorer] information is far more relevant to eliminating suspects according to all the co-ordinates set for the investigation."

Detective Sergeant Jez Grew
Intelligence Research Unit
Warwickshire, England

“The Watson [XANALYS Link Explorer]-based presentation was so clear, that the scam was right here in front of my face. It saved me a great deal of time trying to draw and redraw charts. It saved my investigator time in presentation to the grand jury. And it has saved our taxpayers and our grand jurors a whole lot of headaches.”

Sergeant Mike Creech
Galveston County Auto Crimes Task Force

“You may already have inklings as to what is going on, but Watson [XANALYS Link Explorer] identifies links that, in turn, lead to new links."

Greg Mengell
Executive Director, Interstate Association for Stolen Children
Sacramento, California
