You can make jello shots with almost any type of alcohol, but you should adjust the proportions of alcohol and cold water to ensure that the shot still sets. The higher the proof of the alcohol, the more water that is required for it to set.

Jello shots can be served in shot glasses, as pictured, and can be virtually any color. Many, though, prefer jello shots in paper cups which can be turned inside out to free the jello from the cup. If you do serve jello shots in shot glasses, be sure to also provide knives, toothpicks, or some other mechanism to free the shot from the glass. Alternatively, warming the glass will cause the jello shot to slide free which can be accomplished by steeping them in warm water for less than a minute.

If you are planning a jello shot party, consider diluting your shots with more cold water and less alcohol.  Since the alcohol is contained within the jello, it is absorbed more slowly and even experienced drinkers will often underestimate how much they have had to drink. They will also be less expensive, can be more often enjoyed, and your party will last longer.

Finally, please don't use a premium vodka in a jello shot - the difference in taste is negligible. If you need a suggestion, these cheap vodkas do the trick.

I find that even small plastic cups (the ones you just buy at a grocery store) are often too big for these shots--and a waste. It's not exactly high class, but I find that using very tiny cups is better, like the ones you put ketchup in at fast food restaurants. They aren't available everywhere, but try looking at restaurant supply stores. Solo is a good brand. Also, if you buy the lids that go with them, you can make them ahead of time and keep them in them in the fridge; they stack very easily. So, if you don't care much about appearance, these cups are the way to go.

They are easy to make too in those mini muffin pans you can get a grocery store. Right before you want to serve them, just take them out and stick them on a platter, it looks great at a party, and doesnt leave a mess like cups do. You can also do them in ice cube trays if you don't have the pans.

Try Raspberry Jello with Vodka. Half boiling water and half vodka that has been in the freezer. THEN to top 'em off, squeeze a bit of lemon juice (fresh is best) into each shot. No need to stir.

I bought a package at the local store for easter that had the Jell-o mixes and a fairly largish plastic mold that was to use for jell-o beans. PERFECT! Use the jigglers recipe, and you get these perfect little bite size jell-o beans that are much easier than any cup. And you can limit yourself more if you don't want to get to smashed. If you can find one try it you will not regret it. Huzzah!

Sorry, but your recipe is pretty weak. I tried it as directed, and was just buzzed after like 10 of them. For a better result (that is, if you're trying to get drunk without consuming a ton of jello), use about a third of a handle of booze per 6 ounces of jello mix. Now that'll get ya pretty blitzed!

THe way to make The strongest Jello Shots I have ener tried it to boil water or oil in a pot like you are making fries remove heat source leaving hot oil or water, and dip a cup of vodka in to the hot liquid, but not over the cups top (watch out for splashes), when the vodka begins to boil wait a few more minutes, then take out of hot bath and stir in jello mixture completely. When completely dissolved add chilled vodka or rum to the jello mixture and freeze, this makes them the strongest I have tried, you may also want to add a sweet n low to lower the bitter alcohol taste if you want. be warned when heating the alcohol, never heat over a flame, heat indirectly.

I LOVE Jell-O shooters! I just follow the recipe on the box (1 cup of boiling water & 1 cup cold water for 3 oz) but I substitute liquor for the cold water. This is plenty strong for most people and you can taste the alcohol. Most recipes I've seen call for vodka but I like them with rum. Margarita ones are good too, with lime Jell-O, 6 oz of tequila and 2 oz triple sec. A good brand of liquor makes a difference. As for Dare's snotty comment, some classy people do know how to have fun, he should try it. For those of you wanting them extra strong, you can use all liquor and no water by heating the alcohol, but you may want to only use 12 oz or so total to be sure they gel.

Recipes for jello shots vary but to serve them I have found that using the little plastic cups like the ones you find at places were condiments are served work best. The little cups hold 4 ounces and usually have lids, (Taco Cabana salsa cups or tarter sauce type cups). I buy them from the restraurants themselves for $2.50 for 250 cups with lids. Spray a little bit of cooking spray over the cups before putting in the jello, chill, and they fall right out.

Easier Container

It's not very fancy, but if you need to make lots of jello shots or you just don't want the hassle of lots of cups in your refrigerator; ice cube trays work wonderful. If you freeze them they will pop right out or you can just eat them out of the tray with a spoon. Just thought I would add the advice.

I have read several variations on Jell-O Shots. Not any receipt mentions: 1. Jell-O sticks to the cup 2. 30 minutes will set your Jell-O shots 3. The cups. I have discovered that if you add 1 packet of Knox Gelatin to every large box of Jell-O it will set in 30 minutes. Spray non-flavored (for baking) Pam into the cups and your Jell-O shots will easily slid out after setting! The cups... 1oz Souffle cups. They are cheap and come 200 to a bag. Lids can also be purchased for them. Jell-O will gel at the bottom of your container when mixing, just run hot water on the outside of the container to melt...

I was recently introduced to jello shots and I have to say they are FABULOUS. I started making my own and so far my favorites are fuzzy navel jello shots using orange jello, 1 cup of boiling water, and 1 cup of Peach Schnaps and carmel apples using apple jello and buttershots. As for how to get it out of the cup, I guess not everyone has as strong a tongue as I do, so I would recommend cooking spray. But these are definately crowd pleasers. I however would not suggest putting cherries in them as suggested early because of choking. And Jello shots are no fun if you eat them with a spoon....be creative...strengthen your tongue! ENJOY!

I think that jello shots are great, but for people who want a new variation, this works great! Try making a mixed drink (like cranberry and vodka) and put a bunch of gummy bears at the bottom. Let them sit for about 20 mins, drink the drink, and then you have yummy gummy bears! This also works great for parties as little desserts!

Freezer or Fridge?

I need to know if I can put about 200 jello-shots in the freezer for two days or should I put them in the fridge? The reaso I ask is that we're having a huge party Saturday (we even made a kegerator!;) and I need to make the shots before hand; therefore, can I keep them in the freezer or is it best to put them in the fridge? We made Jello shots for a team party on the Saturday night of a two day Tournament. My mother and Grandmother came to watch the game the next day (ahhh, ain't that sweet). A lil' tip: If you have trouble getting the shot outta the lil' cup, serve them with toothpicks. This allows the consumer to swirl the shot off the sides and into their mouth. I was very surprised to see that no one had mentioned that. It's the only way we do it here in ChiTown!!! MB

Just want to say that I love Jello shots I use coconut rum malibu with any flavor jello uhmmmm so good. I took them to my in-laws for a party my 76yr father in law thought they were just cute cups of jello needless to say he got wasted now he asks for them at every party

I have been making Jello shots for a long time we use 1oz cups you get at a party supply store they are great for usung your tongue to get the shot out. I take to tupperware partys, candle demo, any thing they make a big hit and go far for cheap. try strawberry and coconut rum very good.

how long does it take?

we wanted to see just how long it takes to make different types of jello shots. we used the standard recipie and small dixie cups. here's what we found out: using lime jello and rum shots took (in hours): 5.45, 5.43, 5.50, 5.47, 5.47 cherry jello with rum: 5.51, 5.53, 5.40, 5.46, 5.48 blue jello and rum: 5.41, 5.48, 5.52, 5.47, 5.46 since rum took so long we hoped to make faster shots with vodka, but they weren't much better lime jello and vodka: 5.53, 5.48, 5.40, 5.51, 5.44, cherry jello and vodka: 5.52, 5.46, 5.43, 5.47, 5.45, blue rasberry and vodka: 5.51, 5.45, 5.39, 5.55, 5.40 so if you're planning to make jello shots make sure you give yourself plenty of time for the jello to set. it might also help to make the shots smaller. have fun!

Good Recipe...Needs more Vodka

I recently used the recipe for a batch of Jello shots and they turned out good...except for one thing..they were kind of weak...add a few more oz of vodka and they should be real nice.

The chart above tells you to lower the amount of alcohol used in the mix as the alcohol content (of the alcohol, that is) increases--it's all about inverse proportions. This is why a bottle of vodka can be kept in the freezer to chill. Therefore, use less AMOUNT of alky if it is stronger alky--so it will firm up. Anyone know if it really matters? And I do believe that we classy, level-headed adults enjoy Jell-O shots because it brings our childhood memories of Jigglers that much closer.... Can't wait to try some of the recipe variations.

My friend hosted a party once and she made the coolest jello shots I have ever seen. They were orange slices except instead of the orange part there was just the jello on the peel, looks really cool and are way more fun to eat, this how she did it: -cut oranges in half -spoon out all the orange stuff -mix alchol and jello normally -poor jello mix into balled out orange halfs -let set -once set, cut into smaller normal sized orange slices I thought it was a great Idea and I thought I would share! Oh, and of course keep some normal orange slices around as "virgins" for desginated drivers so they can be part of the fun as well, lol.

Pineapple and coconut or orange and mango?

I enjoy mixing either Parrot Bay Mango Rum with orange jello or Malibu Coconut Flavored Rum (I guess Parrot Bay Coconut would work too) with pineapple jello...I never mix in any cold water because the point of jello shots is to get as drunk as you can as fast as you can while not tasting the hard taste of the liquor. These shots are great for days at the lake or for float trips.

Every year we make jello shots for our annual canoeing trup. We buy little plastic cups that have lids and instead of having the jello set at the bottom of the cup we put the lid on and sit them in the fridge up-side down. It is easier to get them out that way because the shot is at the top of the cup!

Syringes for Shots

Hey, if you havent tried it, the best way to do jello shots is with an oral feeding syringe....you know, the kind you use to give babies there medicine. Get the 20cc size, mix up you jello and alcohol of choice, suck it up into the syringe put on the cap and let it chill. when they are done, all you have to do is push the plunger and shoot the jello into your mouth...there is no mess, and the best thing is that the syringes are easily portable and reusable!!!! you can get them by the case at any medical supply store.

As for class, well, try it with unflavored gelatin (use the Knox Blox recipe, about 3 envelopes) gin and tonic and a bit of sugar served on a lemon or lime slice, or gin, a touch of vermouth and water with an olive slice. I'm not sure if it has been added yet, but I like to serve them with a little whipped cream on top (use the stuff in a can not homemade). Now obviously this only works for the fruity ones, but it has been quite a hit in my experience.

You should combine your flavor / alcohol sensibly. EX: vodka and orange jello = screwdriver shots I find Sambuca especially good with lemon jello, the anise and lemon tastes combine nicely. But be careful. If you do nothing but Jello shots all night, your intoxication will sneek up on you!!!

The best way to get the jello out of the little plastic cups (I prefer the 1 1/2 ounce size) is to take your finger and stick it into the side of the jello and sweep it around the inside rim, while touching the bottom of the cup. You break the binding seal of the jello from the cup...then the fun part is you can have someone else lick your finger!

I made some jello shots last night. I thought it would be a good way to get rid of some really bad gin, but the jello didn't mask the taste of the gin that well. Also, they were a tad liquidy. I guess I should use less alcohol next time. I'd still recommend this drink because I know it would be good if I had used good alcohol.

Jello shots, traditional with Vodka, just aren't that great. The taste of alcohol just isn't for everyone, and Jello shots certainly aren't either. Jello shot's just work better in a paper cup, rather than a glass, but we've noticed they work better in paper cups or juice glasses (3 inch tall glasses from walmart, very cheap). I think if you're going to drink though, at least get shitfaced on something decent besides Jello, it's a little lame.

hi all, from experience jello shots have been a great way to start people off especially in drinking to set the mood, keep the fun in party or in the club, to be more exciting.. of course it wouldn't help to indulge them with your friends or interests. my personal favorite are using peach snapps with peach jello, cherry,apple,orgrape jello with vodka or everclear , rum with any berry flavored jello, and lemon with tequila, lime along southern comfort- all added with a fruit inside like maraschino cherries,apple,grape. lemon rind or a gummy bear(inside of course!), just to add some surprise and fun. to top it all off, some whip cream passing around shared by everybody!

I had a party and I served jello-shots and a very unexperienced drinking got too drunk. She passed out and threw up everywhere....best to dilute.

Jello shots are the best! my suggestion is to make the giggler recepie and pour it into a sheetcake pan that has been sprayed with pam. once it sets. cut into cubes, toss them onto a plate or into a large plastic baggie (for a party on the go) and enjoy!! if you do make them in little cups use a toothpick to loosen them or just rip the cup if it's paper. good for uptight people who are not as likely to drink

Gummy worms are the best way to get jello shots out of the cup. I use the little food cups from food supply stores other people have mentioned. When I made my jello shots for a Halloween party, I put gummy worms in them and then put them in the fridge to set up. I used regular gummy worms cut in half, because they were too long otherwise, and sour worms, which for some reason were shorter. Drape the worm half in, half out of the cup. When they harden, you can pull the worm, and the jello comes out in one piece. From there, just suck the shot off the worm and eat the worm separately. They worked out great! I've made jello shots a lot, and I like to pick a variety of flavors and colors, and do the 1 cup boiling water, 1 cup chilled vodka recipe. They are always a huge hit!!

I put in either everclear or gin in them, and follow the recipe. So instead of putting cold water in it I put the liquer and let it set for it least 30 min. or a little longer. If you want to get f***ed up on New Years Eve this is the way to go. And the best thing is you don't taste the alcohol until after you have swallowed at least 6. And the best way not to get a hangover the next day is to drink water while you are drinking or swallowing the shots of any kind.

Jello is my all time fav. dessert. Add your favourite drink and mix in! The best recipie is the speed set method-3/4 cup boing water 1/2 cup liquor + ice cubes. Me and my sister inlaw for x-mas were at our inlaws, and we made jello shots..lol.. well they didnt exactly turn out......YUUUUKKK.. i like booze but not to strong,,, so when i got back home i tried hte recipe again and they were soooomuch better,,,, i noticed hte difference was at the inlaws we used absolut vodka,,,, but at home i used the 4.99 vodka. it worked so much better and tasted ALOT better. grape and berry blue jello mix is awesome for those tropical nights.....

For a big party i threw, i wanted to make literally hundreds of different flavored jello shots, and i was appaled at the idea of all those dirty mixing bowls and spoons, not to mention spooning the mix into a bunch of little cups. Then, genius struck, I took about ten empty water bottles, (the kind with the thing you pull up to dispense liquid) and poured the jello, water and then alcohol into them. ( one for each flavor) I tightened all the lids, shook the hell out of them to mix the jello, and then used the little sipper thing to squirt the liquid into the cups. It worked great, and I've been doing it ever since. Also, for a college dirnking party i recommend the little cups you get ketchup in, but for smaller parties, i like to use the disposable plastic champagne cups you can buy for new year's, and you serve them with colored plastic spoons and whipped cream on top. If you really want to go all out, you can layer the jello shots by letting each layer set before you pour the next one on. These come out very pretty and are appropriate for slightly classier events. :) let me know if you like my ideas, I've got plenty more!

Whenever we go canoeing, we make jello shots in those little disposable Solo brand condiment cups. They mave little matching lids that snap into place. You can make three or four batches of them, throw them in a cooler, and be all set for the long day on the river. And...as a bonus...they are super cheap and easy to find.

just started making these little buggers a few months ago, and i have tried almost 2 dozen different combinations. here are a few of my favorites: pineapple jello; pina colada mix; malibu rum apple jello; apple TANG; apple vodka berry blue jello; cran FUZE; raspberry vodka peach jello; peach schnapps; jack daniels; strawberry jello; watermelon pucker; watermelon vodka cherry jello; maraschino cherry liquid; any very very good quality vodka; add a maraschino cherry to the top of the shot for a touch of class; cherry jello; coke (cherry coke); light rum just think of any good mixed drink, and i'm sure you can turn that into a jello shot. i find spraying those 'solo' 1 ounce cups with original Pam works great...those lids are also helpful in keeping the fridge organized when you are making TONS of this stuff. i find it odd that, although i make these, i have never tasted them (i am diabetic...anyone ever make these with sugar-free jello?) have fun!

I used the recipe found above this column. I found it to be just right. Not too strong, not weak at all. After five jello shots, I had a nice buzz and I am not a lightweight drinker at all. So I suggest that if you want to get drunk faster, just add more alcohol but dont expect most guests to like the taste..

If you make them with Hypnotic they will taste really good and get you drunk way faster then vodka or rum or anything else and hypnotic tastes really good mixed with any flavored jello but hypnotic is kinda expensive. But trust me it tastes great and is really strong.

The easiest way I found to get the Jello shot out of the cup is to just spray the cup with Pam before you put the jello mixture in the cup. :) You cant taste the Pam so its all good.

I've never had a jello shot because I'm not a big fan of jello. After reading the comments, I think I'll give them a try real soon. I DID just have a White Russian though and since I hadn't eaten anything, It hit me pretty fast. I made the jello shots with everclear and put 8 ounces of both alcohol and cold water mixed with the 16 ounces boiling water and they were great. I mixed lemon and lime jello together for a different jello taste.

I make jello shots all of the time for all of my friends parties and they love them. If you want to make them stronger without tasting the alcohol add an extra shot of shave ice syrup to the jello. The syrup comes in all flavors imagineable and can be found in most grocery stores next to the kool aid stuff. Also gives you a chance to be creative mixing flavors. Have Fun!

Thanks for all the recipes and tips. Shots were the life of the party for this novice jello shot crowd. Camping weekend at a friend house for an almost 50 crowd. All jello shot virgins. Menu included rasberry jello with rasberry vodka, lime jello with tequila/lime juice, & triple sec(margarita shots) and extreme green apple jello with sour apple pucker. i made jello shots for the first time and i made tequila sunrise shots and they were good. you gotta try this recipe. first heat 1 cup water to boiling then add boiling water to strawberry jello powder and put 1/4 cup water and tequila in then make orange then same way and add when strawberry is settled then add a touch of whip cream if wanted. i tried with half cup but you can add more or less to your taste. i also made up another jello shot but i need someone to try them first so here it is. i call it strawberry magurita shots you make strawberry jello with 1 cup hot water then add half cup magurita mix and half cup tequila and mix together and let settle. someone email me and tell me what you think off this then i will try them after someone likes them.

10~14~05 / 1:32am i'm 34 yrs old & been makin' jello shots 4 over 10 years. i'm giving the "spraying PAM in the cups" tip a shot! thanx 4 the advice KIDS! my husband thinks it'll taste gross. we'll c! 1 oz solo/dixie cups with lids r the bomb! it'll b hella easy 2 stack them in the fridge AND since they're covered they won't take on any new flavors that's in ur fridge. packing them 2 go is simple. throw them in gallon sized ziplock bags. i'm taking them 2 a party 10 minutes from the house so they'll b fine. if travel time is longer, put the ziploc in cooler with ice. 1 small box of jello = 25ish* shots. 1 large box = 75ish* shots. *u will have more shots if u DON'T fill the cups up. however, i find it looks 1/2 empty when they're not filled. remember, simply substitute the cold water with ur alcohol of choice. hope my experience helps. enjoy being the hit of the party !

Shots I go to the toothpaste/or paper good isle, depends on what store and get the plastic bathroom cups, way better than the wax coated (DON'T USE the wax coated super nasty!) And then I spray them with PAM helps them to slid out with ease. TO MAKE; I use 1 large, or two small boxes of J-ello (any flavor), boil with 16 oz of water, and add 16 oz Parrot Bay Rum after boiling; or for a much stronger shot, 8 oz Parrot Bay Rum, and 8 oz Vodka. NO DILUTION OF WATER! Use a 1/3 measure cup to scoop out and pour into cups, makes 16 shots!

jello shots with flavored alcohol like puckers and vanilla vodka etc. is horrible. There is already sugar in the jello and flavor so when you add the sweet flavored alcohol it DOES NOT taste very good. Makes them too sweet or just down right nasty depending on your mix.

i make homemade wine and decided to try to incorporate it into the shots..... my peach is the best followed by strawberry and i use 7-up as a filler for all of my shots 1/2 cup boiled water then 1/2 cup whatever kind of alcohol i want ....personally i love blueberry with coconut rum (my grown daughter said it's too strong so i have to back off the liquor for her) i love jello shots and i have them around the house most weekends i use the 1oz. solo cups and set them in a cafeteria tray and put the tray on a shelf in fridge wish i had a few more trays (LOL)

A helpful hint to get them out instead of trying to pry them out with toothpicks or whatever is to spray PAM or some other type of spray in the cups before you pour the jell-o in. They just slide right out and you can't taste the PAM at all.

the easiest and funnest way to serve jello shots is in an empty orange peel. you cut an orange in half, then scoop out the inards (maybe even save some to make fruit chunks in the jello) pour the mixture in the orange then when they have set cut those in half (1/4 of the entire orange). you can put toothpics and triangle wax paper on top to make little sail boats

I'm lame, and made them in plastic plates (w/ lids) instead of glasses (I'm broke & didnt want to invest PLUS, I need to transport them). for all of the people who say mix 8oz everclear and 8oz water: this is pointless. everclear is used because its stronger than vodka or run. typically its twice as strong as your average 80proof alky. so diluting it by half does nothing but make the shot the same strength and taste like rubbing alky. just stick to the 80proof if youre going to dilute.

The way I make the shot is to put the jello in plastic bags and form a shape like icing a on a cake that squeezes from the top to bottom then cut a hole in the bottom and suck the jello shot out. its a lot better than using cup trsut me:)

@"party girl": I think it's highly unlikely you can choke on a jello shot. When you put them in your mouth they melt pretty fast. If they were to stuck in the throat they probably will melt even faster, if not, you can probably make it melt almost instantly with a hot beverage. About the transport issue; I've tried making jello and jello shots a couple of times and after they have been taken out of the fridge, it haven't really melted for me in hours. Not until you eat it or heat it up. I live in Sweden so i don't know if the water here is different or what, but it sure isn't melting. :-) And i'm using the american Jell-o. While i'm at it, i would like some tips about getting the shots out of the cup easily. I've seen a couple of people recomend PAM spray, but we don't have that in Sweden (it's toxic and stuff as i understand). Are paper cups the way to go? I was thinking about borrowing some from McDonalds but went to check it out i saw they were too small, so i haven't tried with paper cups yet. Thanks in advance!

Someone showed me a while back that the easier way to do the shots was to purchase some of the 2x3 ziploc bags you can get from jewelers or from ebay. You can get a lot of bags for little money. You can fill them up using a new turkey baster (looks like a huge eyedropper). Throw them in some ice water and you will have them ready and you can make all kinds and have very little waste.

Hey if you like to make your shots with Vodka but you dont want to water down the vodka to get rid of the taste I suggest that you run the vodka through a Brita water filter I pretty much eliminates the taste with out sacrifice of the proof! Have fun!

If you use everclear, grain alcohol, or the shine "moonshine", the only other way to make these stronger, youre looking to get yourself sick, or someone is bound to have enough to get alcohol poisoning, possible death. Get some crunk in yo system, but please know your limits and REMEMBER if you drink and drive, dont park; accidents cause people.

A very good mix is Lime Bacardi with Lime Jello, and you can even squeeze a few limes into the mix. Very tasty!

Thanks for all the great ideas, and btw you can get the small (biodegradable) paper souffle cups at costco, sam's, or restaurant supply places. To the person who associates fun haters with tree huggers, that was pretty ignorant. Nothing wrong with being a tree hugger. Cheers! :]

What my cousin does and I, we make differant colors of jello shots, but we add in differant amounts of alcohol. The cooler colors have less alcohol and then the warms colors have more alcohol in them.

To make jello you use ice, so put the alcohol in the freezer the day before you make your jello shots. It should will set quicker, too. slurp.....ahh!
