Brief History
of the Pontins International Open Series (PIOS)
Following the ending of the Challenge Tour at the end of the 2004/5
season, all players not on the main tour reverted to amateur status unless they
wished only to enter the world championship. The Pontins International Open
Series was established as the main qualifying event for the main tour. Eight
events are spread throughout the season with the leading eight players at the
end of the season gaining professional status for the following season. In the
first season the best six results counted toward the final table but that was
changed to the best seven in 2006/7
