09/06/2002. Some information about the Havel spring:

The source (spring) of the river Havel is situated near the village of Ankershagen, east of lake Mueritz. Originally the lake Bornsee was the source of the river Havel. In the 19. century the Havel was cut off of this lake because a railway and water mill embankment near the south shore of the lake Muehlensee was constructed . The old source lake Bornsee has a water connection to the next lake Trinnensee and the following Muehlensee. After shut-down of the mill people simply forgot to reconnect the small river to its source lake. The source of the river Havel is now supplied by drainage water out of a meadow (called Dieckenbruch) situated about 50 meters of the lake Muehlensee shore. In reality the river Havel is not the Havel anymore! Due to the water-shed the river actually flows via river Tollense to the Baltic Sea. You will hardly find this information in the literature. Therefore, dear Mecklenburgers, Brandenburgers and Berliners: Technically the river, which we call the Havel would have to be renamed!?

(Havelquelle, Havel-Quelle, Wasserscheide, Mühlensee, Bornsee, Trinnensee, Dambecker See)

Photo 1, photo 2, photo 3, photo 4

Strpy-Thieu (built: 1982 - 2002) Ship-lift in Belgium (Thanks to Kenny Staelens for the photos). This ship-lift, on the Canal du Centre between Mons and La Louvire, has been the world's biggest since it began operation on 2002-09-02! It enables boats to rise (or fall) a height of 73,15 metres. Each of the 2 independent tanks is 112 metres long and 12 metres wide. One tank weighs 8000 tons in working order. It can carry a total load of 2000 tons, but the the rest of the canal is only suitable for standard 1350 ton barges. Each tank is attached to its counterweight by 144 cables. The engine room is at the upper level. (Thanks to Kris Roelants and Alan Reekie for this information ).

The new ship-lift at Strpy-Thieu on the Canal du Centre replaces a group of four historic ship-lifts for 300-ton barges in La Louvire, which are preserved as one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites! The oldest lift, inaugurated in June 1888, is in Houdeng-Goegnies and has a rise of 15,397 metres. The other three ship-lifts and the canal itself were taken into service in 1917. One has a rise of 16,934 metres, the other two each have a rise of 16,933 metres. All four lifts have a similar design : a hydraulic balance consisting of 2 interlinked tanks 43 metres long and 5,8 metres wide. (Thanks to Alan Reekie, Brussels for this information.)

Ronquires is a small village. The inclined plane was built in 1968. The inclined plane is on the Canal from Brussels to Charleroi. It exists of 2 bacs. Each bac can carry 1350 tons. The inclined plane has a lenght of 1432 metres and a height of 68 metres. Each bac has 236 wheels, a leght of 91 metres and a broad of 12 metres. On the upper level there is a tower with a hight of 125 metres. The engines room is at the upper level, down in the tower.

Ronquires (built: 1962 - 1968) Inclined Plane in Belgium. (Thanks to Kenny Staelens for the photos). The inclined plane on the Canal between Brussels and Charleroi, near the small village of Ronquires was opened in April 1968. It consists of 2 independent tanks with counterweights. Each tank can carry a standard 1350 ton barge. The inclined plane has a length of 1432 metres and a height of 68 metres. Each tank is 91 metres long and 12 metres wide, and runs on 236 wheels. On the upper level there is a public viewing tower 125 metres high. The engine room is at the upper level, beneath the tower.
