August 1968 - Victims of the Occupation
The August invasion of five Warsaw Pact armies and their actions in Czechoslovakia claimed lives and a succession of seriously injured from among the Czechoslovak population. The greatest losses followed the Soviet soldiers’ encounter with an unarmed crowd in the vicinity of the Czechoslovak Radio building in Prague. Victims were announced not only from additional locations in the capital city, but also from other cities and communities (Liberec, Brno, Bratislava, Kosice, Poprad and more). On the first day of the occupation alone, dozens of people were wounded, many of them seriously. Losses carried on further days, weeks and months. In total, the occupation of Czechoslovakia claimed 108 lives through the end of the year 1968, with another 500 seriously injured and hundreds more slightly injured.
