Seamount

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

A seamount is an underwater mountain. The base of the seamount is on the seafloor and its summit doesn't reach the water surface (if it did, it would be an island). There are thousands of seamounts located throughout the world's oceans.

Seamounts are found in the deep sea. They may provide important navigational landmarks to migrating animals such as whales.
