Fairmont Hospital has a rich history spanning the past 136 years. Originally known as the Alameda County Infirmary, it admitted its first patient on August 16, 1864. In the 1920's, Fairmont began providing rehabilitation services. It established groundbreaking programs in geriatrics and was the first hospital in the East Bay to offer AIDS services in 1984.

Today, Fairmont is a vital resource for many stages in the continuum of care. The Acute Rehabilitation Center is one of the foremost providers of rehabilitation services in Northern California. The Hospital based Skilled Nursing Facility provides long term care services to patients whose complex needs after acute hospitalization cannot be met in a community skilled nursing facility. The Neuro-Respiratory Unit for ventilator dependent patients fills a highly specialized need amongst Bay Area health facilities. And the HIV Clinic, the oldest of its kind in the East Bay, continues to offer outstanding clinical and case management services to county residents who are HIV+.
