Board of Directors Milestones


Weightlifting is undoubtedly the main sport in which Greek athletes have been recognized as great champions. The collection of Olympic medals is still growing!

1984 was a great year for weightlifting in Greece. It was in that year when Yannis Sgouros, the current Governer of Athens became President of the Hellenic Weightlifting Federation. His constant attempts to update the administrative and management activities of weightlifting, as a result of his great love for this sport, made it a sport of champions. In the following years, weightlifting met a rapid advancement and Greece an international acknowledgement.

Crucial strategic activities resulted in making weightlifting the leading sport.
In a competitive environment, the Olympic champions as Pyrros Dimas, Akakios Kahiasvili, and all the other great Greek weightlifters, would stay isolated, if the qualified officials of weightlifting did not make the right resolutions. 

It is time to describe the first Executive Board of the Hellenic Weightlifting Federation.  

It was founded on October 7, 1972, and comprised the following members: Kontos (president), Xifaras (vice-president), Sarpiezis (general secretary), Christodoulou (accountant), Leonidis, Panasopoulos, Vrontos, Theologitis, Georgiou (executive members).

The incorporating clubs of the Hellenic Weightlifting Federation were the following:

3 Atlas Kallithea, representative Grigorios Vallianatos

7 G.S. Iraklis Thessaliniki, representative Konstantinos Kosmopoulos

10 B.A.O. Thessaloniki, representative Petros Montzalas

At the beginning, Hellenic Weightlifting Federation was part of the Hellenic Wrestling Federation, which was founded in 1935 after Zack Karyotalis’ initiative who managed what other members of the executive board had earlier tried without success: to take away weightlifting, wrestling and boxing from SEGAS jurisdiction.

 On January 20,1998 Katsikarelis was appointed assistant secretary, while Mostrous took over as accountant.
