From [email protected] Mon Feb 25 11:18:06 2002 The NP219 is called the Quadratrac, uses a differentiated means of providing fulltime 4x4, it does have an emergency lockup. It's better than the NP229 Selectrac because it does offer the lock mode in 4x4 high. The NP228/229 does not, only in low range. The Quadratrac concept lives on. Sure it started in 1973 with the Borg Warner 1339, and morphed into the New Process NP219 in 80 through 82, but it's back in the ZJ model Grand Cherokee, not sure of the year or designator, still as Quadratrac (and they also use Selectrac for the NP242 and Command Trac for the NP231) In '99 when they launced the Grand Cherokee WJ, they incorporated the gerotor technology in the axles and xfr case and call it Quadratrac II and when combinded with the axles, QUADRADRIVE. It's impressive. All four tires will spin... IT does have some of the characteristics of the original, when turning it binds up a bit. :) However, technology is a wonderful thing and this Jeep gets 19.6 mpg on the highway, but only 13 to 16 in town... :) So the terms Command Trac, Selectrac and Quadratrac are just the way Jeep refers to part time/partial full time and full time 4x4 modes, there is nothing "sacred" about the word Quadratrac and it doesn't refer exclusively to the old Borg Warner system. :) later, john On 25 Feb 2002 [email protected] wrote: >--> 2.
