Introduction? |
A unique sea voyage across the Indian Ocean in a
reconstructed ancient 8th Century Borobudur ship.
|
|
The Borobudur Ship
Expedition
will retrace the ancient trading and migratory routes
taken by mariners who sailed from Indonesian Archipelago
across the Indian Ocean to Africa during the first millennium.
The voyage will be made using the first modern day
reconstruction of one of the world’s most unique vessels
that combines a double outrigger structure, numerous rowing
ports, a significant sail area and capacious hull. |

The Colonisation of Madagascar
It is believed that
a vessel of this type made a significant contribution to the trade
and migrations of people from the Indonesian Archipelago who were
responsible for colonising Madagascar during the first millennium
and exerting a substantial cultural influence throughout parts of
Africa.
The objective of the expedition is to use the
reconstructed vessel to see the context under which the Indonesians
would have reached Madagascar, East Africa - and potentially if they
could have rounded the Cape of Good Hope and sailed up to West
Africa.
|
Indonesians are still a strong sea
faring nation.
