Web Technology Market Reports

Summary:

Today, we start providing extensive market reports for the web technologies that we monitor. These reports contain detailed market surveys of a technology in a compact form. The goal is to give technology providers and other professionals interested in certain technologies a way to find relevant facts quickly and easily.

If you are interested in a certain technology, you may want to know facts such as these (these are only examples of questions, more facts can be found in the reports):

As an illustrative example, I will use the November 2011 facts for the Google +1 social widget to answer these questions, but the corresponding answers could be found for (almost) any other technology that we monitor, be it a content management system, an web analytics tool, an advertising network, or anything else.

  • What is the percentage of websites using this technology?
    • Google +1 is used by 7.470% of all websites.
  • What is the market share?
    • The Google +1 market share amongst social widget providers is 31.458%.
  • How does this compare to competing technologies? Which are the most popular competing technologies?
    • Google +1 ranks second, Facebook has almost twice the market share.
  • How does this change over time, e.g. in the last year?
    • Google +1 started with 0.5% usage in July 2011. It gained on average 965.43 new sites every day in the last month, this is a monthly growth of 66.8% of its user base.
  • How does the growth rate compare to competing technologies? Which are the fastest growing technologies in that market? Which ones are loosing market share are how fast?
    • Google +1 is the fastest growing social widget. Facebook and Twitter are next. Delicious is on the losing end.
  • Is this technology used primarily by high traffic sites or by average sites?
    • A top 1,000 site is 1.419 times as likely to use Google +1 than a top 1 million site. Only Twitter has a higher share of high traffic sites in its user base.
  • What is the market share amongst the top 1,000 websites, or, for example, amongst the top 100,000?
    • Google +1 is used by 7.788% of the top 1,000 sites, that is a market share of 36.946% in that category. The corresponding figures for the top 100,000 sites are 11.681% and 40.249%.
  • Which versions of the technology are used, and which subversions?
    • There is no version tracking for social widgets.
  • How does the usage of versions change over time?
  • What is the percentage of websites using a more recent versions than a specific one, say version 2.3?
  • If websites only start using this technology, which competing technologies did they typically use before? What are examples of websites that switched from specific competing technologies recently?
    • Most sites switch from Facebook. 0.928% of the websites that are using Google +1 were using Facebook until recently. Dinner-jones.de is an example of a site that made this change.
  • If websites change to a competing technology, which ones do they typically chose? What are examples of websites that switched to specific competing technologies recently?
    • Only few other social widgets gain sites from Google +1. 0.001% of of the websites that were using Google +1 until recently are now using DZone. Jenx67.com is an example of a site that made this change.
  • What is the market share of the technology amongst websites using various web servers; or various operating systems; or various content management systems?
    • The highest usage of Google +1 is on sites that run Google Servers as web server: Google +1 is used by 42.371% of all the websites that use Google Servers. This is a social widget market share of 58.695% and rank 2 amongst the Google Servers websites. Usage of Google +1 on IBM Servers is only 1.068%, which is rank 4 amongst the social widgets on IBM Server sites.
  • What is the market share of the technology in different countries; or in different language regions? How does the technology rank in various countries?
    • Google +1 is particularly popular amongst websites that use .li (Liechtenstein) as top level domain. It is used by 13.235% of all the websites that use .li. This is a social widget market share of 47.368% and rank 2 amongst the .li websites. Google +1 is only used by 0.346% of Chinese (.cn) websites, this is nevertheless rank 1 amongst the social widgets on .cn sites.
  • What are the most popular sites using that technology?
    • The two most popular sites are adult sites (not mentioned here, but listed in the report), then comes Alibaba.com. Many popular sites also use Facebook, Twitter and AddThis in addition to Google +1.
  • What are the most popular sites that recently started using that technology, and which competing technology did they use before?
    • Digg.com is an example of a popular site that uses Google +1 only recently. They are also using Facebook. Thechive.com is an example of a popular site that switched from Google Buzz to Google +1.
  • What are the most popular sites that recently discontinued using that technology, and which competing technology are they using now?
    • Expedia.com is an example of a popular site that recently stopped using Google +1. They are still using Facebook.

      Show tables and diagrams of monthly trends in the usage of versions of the selected technology (where applicable).
    • Change Reports
      Show the percentages of websites that recently changed between the selected technology and other competing technologies. It also shows examples of sites that made a change.
    • Ranking Breakdown Reports
      Show usage and market shares of the selected technology broken down by popularity ranges of the Alexa ranking.
    • Market Position Reports
      Show the market position of the selected technology in terms of popularity and traffic compared to the most popular competing technologies.
    • Cross-Technologies Breakdown and Segmentation Reports
      A set of reports evaluating the combined usage of two categories of web technologies, e.g. usage of the selected technology across top level domains.
    • List of up to 50 popular sites using the selected technology including their usage of other competing technologies (if any).
    • List of up to 50 sites that started using the selected technology in the last month, including the competing technologies they were using before (if any).
    • List of up to 50 sites that discontinued using the selected technology in the last month, including the competing technologies they are using now (if any).
