New survey shows the usage of multiple competing technologiesPosted by Matthias Gelbmann on 5 July 2012 in NewsFor some types of functionality, webmasters tend to simultaneously use several technologies on the same site. A good example are traffic analysis tools. The sites that use only one of thees tools are a minority. The reason might be that these tools offer different features, sometimes webmasters might not fully trust the figures they provide, and they prefer to have a second opinion. Our new report shows for each traffic analysis tool how many sites use additionally another competing tool. We see that the market leader in that area, Google Analytics, is also the tools that is often used just by itself. Still, 26% of all sites use at least a second tool. The other tools are typically used in combination with a second one, very often in combination with Google Analytics. The other end of the spectrum is Performable, which is hardly ever used only by itself. Another interesting category are JavaScript libraries. We see a similar pattern, the market leader jQuery is often used just alone, whereas most other libraries tend to be used in combinations. Sometimes, that is quite expected, for example Script.aculo.us is based on Prototype and is never used without it, or the very specialized Knockout library simply doesn't provide many of the features of other libraries. I want to invite you to explore this new type of reports, which we provide for most technologies, e.g. advertising networks, server-side languages, content management systems and content languages. Please note, that we don't suggest that this new metrics tells us anything about the quality of the products. What it shows is an interesting usage pattern, and this is the whole purpose of our surveys. You can find more detailed reports about which precise combinations of technologies are used in our monthly technology reports. Share this page |
