Current research and teaching strategies for the writing, reading and literary education of the pupils with ADHD

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) presents challenges that affect everyday life and... more ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) presents challenges that affect everyday life and learning for pupils as well as their teachers and parents. Much has been written and researched when it comes to the disorder, with some conclusions resulting in considerable debate and controversy. Experts on ADHD offer a number of suggestions to help pupils with reading and writing. This paper presents some ways to provide pupils with secondary "fidget" activities, ones that don't distract pupils from the task at hand but actually help them focus on a task. For example, allowing them to listen to music while reading a textbook, having students listen to a recorded version of a book while reading the text, or giving students an extra piece of paper to doodle on while working on a writing assignment. Other strategies that build focus and comprehension, like reading aloud, previewing materials, asking questions, identifying the main ideas, word games and other components of successful reading programs, are helpful at an early age. Even if ADHD pupils master the mechanics of reading, many have trouble understanding the text, making connections within the story, and relating what they're reading to what they already know. Fortunately, reading comprehension skills and strategies can be taught. Children who learn multiple reading strategies, and are guided in their use, eventually choose some to use on their own.

Aim of the research study is to analyse the relationship between partial cognitive functions (vis... more Aim of the research study is to analyse the relationship between partial cognitive functions (visual separation-figure/background differentiation, visual differentiation of shapes, visual memory, auditory separation-figure/background differentiation, auditory differentiation of speech, auditory memory, intermodal relations, perception of time sequence) in the context of reading competence development (reading technique and method, reading comprehension) of 4th grade pupils with mild intellectual disabilities educated in school integration in the Prešov region, Slovakia, in which we have followed current level of the variables (reading competence, partial cognitive functions) in selected research respondents. The research findings might contribute to the creation of targeted cognitive stimulation programme in the context of reading competence development of pupils with mild intellectual disabilities in younger school age.

Differences in the Perception of Behavior Problems in Pre-school Children among the Teachers and Parents

Even the behavior problems in preschool children might be considered as a transitional problem wh... more Even the behavior problems in preschool children might be considered as a transitional problem which may disappear by their transition into elementary school; it is an issue that needs a lot of attention because of the fact that the behavioral patterns are adopted in the children especially in this age. Common issue in the process of elimination of the behavior problems in the group of preschool children is a difference in the perception of the importance and gravity of the symptoms. The underestimation of the children's problems by parents often result into conflicts with kindergarten teachers. Thus, the child does not get the support that his/her problems require and this might result into a school failure and can negatively influence his/her future school performance and success. The research sample consisted of 4 children with behavior problems, their teachers and parents. To determine the most problematic area in the child's behavior, Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) filled by parents and Caregiver/Teacher Form (CTF-R) filled by teachers were used. Scores from the CBCL and the CTR-F were compared with Pearson correlation coefficient in order to find the differences in the perception of behavior problems in preschool children.

ADHD is described as having “many faces”, and as being “one of the most talked-about and controversial subjects in education”, causing “heated debates” (Bloom et Cohen, 2006). In Europe, recent estimates place the number of children with special educational needs (SEN) at 15 million. Conservative estimates state that dyslexia, a learning disability that impedes a person’s ability to read, affects approximately 6 percent of Europe’s population, whilst the prevalence of autistic spectrum disorders is also estimated to be higher than previously thought. Children with SEN frequently leave school with few qualifications and are much more likely to become unemployed or economically inactive. Vi... more Visible cracking occurs when the tensile stresses exceed the tensile strength of the material. Visible cracking is frequently a concern since these cracks provide easy access for the infiltration of aggressive solutions into the concrete and reach the reinforcing steel or, other components of the structure leading to deterioration. The design of a structure with reduced width of the cracks can be done using a variety of standards and guidelines. The individual guidelines introduce different procedures for design of the amount of the reinforcement for the cracks width limitation. This paper deals with calculation of the required reinforcement area for the crack widths limitation according to national annexes of the standard EN 1992-1-1, Model Code 2010 and other standards and their differences in the design of the structures.

Problem behaviour is increasingly observed in preschool children. Its occurrence can negatively a... more Problem behaviour is increasingly observed in preschool children. Its occurrence can negatively affect not only a child's preschool education and readiness for further education, or develop into more serious behavioural disorders, but according to several studies, behavioural problems at an early age also affect an individual's educational attainment in adulthood. The proposed study presents the results of a nationwide survey in Slovakia, where, through a self-constructed questionnaire, pedagogical and professional staff of kindergartens in Slovakia (n=450) reflected on incidence, prevalence, symptoms, and gender differences in behaviour problems manifested among children of preschool age in the Slovak kindergartens.
