Martin Turkis II is a teacher, musician, and philosopher residing in San Francisco. He was awarded his Ph.D. in philosophy by the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. His book, The Metaphysics of Michael Polanyi: Toward a Post-critical Platonism, published by Palgrave Macmillan, is currently available. His interests include metaphysics, virtue ethics, philosophy of education, and political economy. He is the general editor of Tradition and Discovery, the journal published by The Polanyi Society.

This article aims to complicate the economic and political terrain on which debates within Polany... more This article aims to complicate the economic and political terrain on which debates within Polanyi Studies take place, arguing that imprecise terminology and an ossified set of Cold War concepts erect dubious and simplistic dichotomies (e.g., liberal/conservative, markets/planning, freedom/totalitarianism, etc.) that are not up to the task of appropriately navigating contemporary political economy. The essay accomplishes this task by offering counterexamples to status quo assumptions in Polanyi Studies as well as by suggesting more nuanced avenues for future Polanyian exploration.

Chesterton's influence on Jorge Luis Borges had been exaggerated. In this essay I argue that not only was Chesterton's impact on Borges profound (as the ample scholarly literature attests), but also that we can apply the critical method proposed by Borges in "Los precursores de Kafka" and find traces of Borges in Chesterton's work. To demonstrate this I provide a close reading of Chesterton's novel, The Napoleon of Notting Hill, arguing that Borges's literary style is prefigured uncannily by the novel's two protagonists.

Robert Scholes is a respected literary critic and semiotician who, motivated by dissatisfaction w... more Robert Scholes is a respected literary critic and semiotician who, motivated by dissatisfaction with the reigning epistemological assumptions in the field of literary theory, has advocated revamping the discipline of English in significant ways. Scholes's own epistemology and semiotic approach to pedagogy cohere quite well with Polanyi's epistemological work and are, in essence, post-critical. Given that far more students in the American educational system study English than philosophy, a wider embrace of Scholes's pedagogical approach could provide more opportunities than are currently available to give students access to a post-critical formation. Scholes's epistemology, semiotics, and pedagogy are discussed in some detail, and resonances with Polanyi's grand project are highlighted.

In so doing, it begins to outline a phenomenological approach to Platonist virtue ethics informed by Murdoch's work and drawing heavily on Polanyi's post-critical episte-mology; it also gestures toward how such an approach might be applied in the classroom.

She also argues that this position ought to serve as the basis for an immanent and non-normative ontoethics. I give a summation and review of the book before offering an argument against such an approach to ethics. I also offer a related critique of the tendency, widespread within critical theory, to consider all transcendence oppressive.
